New Video Showcases Battlefront II Capital Supremacy Mode

EA has released a new video (above) which showcases Star Wars Battlefront II’s new gaming mode, Capital Supremacy. Check out the video above, and read more details about the new game mode below.

The Ground Phase

The looming capital ships overlook the scenery where players deploy into the thick of the Clone Wars. They enter an open-ended warzone accompanied by vicious blaster fire, calculating droids, and morale-boosting rallying cries.

Two teams of 20, aided by 12 additional non-human, AI controlled troopers on each side, fight to control a majority of five command posts on the ground. It’s an intense and open-ended conflict, where you can utilize a wide array of tactics, trooper classes, land vehicles, reinforcement units, and hero characters to attack and defend different areas across the surface.

Hold on, did we just announce the presence of AI controlled troopers in Capital Supremacy? That’s right, for the first time in any PVP mode in Star Wars Battlefront II, AI ground troops will battle alongside and against you, contest the command posts, and be additional targets for the players to rain fire upon – upping the intensity of the combat even more!

By capturing and controlling most of the command posts in the Ground Phase, your team gains reinforcements. The reinforcements are represented by tickets added to your team’s progress bar. Once a side has mustered enough reinforcements – thus winning the Ground Phase and becoming attackers – they’ll be given a shot at invading the enemy capital ship.

The struggle for area control now turns into a race towards two incoming transport shuttles. For each attacker managing to run the gauntlet and embark on any of the shuttles, additional tickets are given.

The total amount of tickets feeds into how many reinforcements the attackers have at their disposal in the upcoming Invasion Phase. Consequentially, the defenders must do everything they can to stop the other side from strengthening their invasion force.

Once the transport shuttle boarding timer runs out, a cinematic sequence will depict the transports ascending with the attackers to invade the Republic Attack Cruiser or the Separatist Dreadnought.

The Invasion Phase

The mission is now to destroy – or crush the invaders’ attempt at doing so – the capital ship from the inside. Attacking as the clones and the heroes of the Clone Wars, you’ll take on the Separatist Dreadnought, while on the side of the Separatists and villains, you’ll be looking to abolish the Republic Attack Cruiser.

The AI troops will stay grounded, leaving the close-quarters Invasion Phase to be fought between players exclusively.

The layout and look of the two ships are, as you would expect, meticulously modelled to represent the two Clone Wars-era factions. Inside the Separatist Dreadnought, you’ll see MTTs painted with the Separatist grey and blue color scheme, fight throughout the droid deployment bay, and attack or defend the ship’s weak points: the cooling vent chambers. The dagger-like Republic Attack Cruiser, on the other hand, features its own unique areas, such as the cargo bay and reactor core chambers.

Independent of the faction being invaded, the ways to go about the objectives are similar. As an attacker, you need to fight your way out of the hangar and breach the first line of defense by overriding one of two security consoles. This will grant access to the hallways leading to the two chambers hosting the ship’s weak points.

If the attackers manage to arm the charges on both – and hold the line until the timer expires – they can celebrate the victory as the enemy ship plunges towards the ground.

But here’s the twist: if the defenders manage to eliminate enough attackers to deplete their reinforcement tickets (this is why the extra tickets earned by boarding the transport shuttles can be so decisive), the battle goes back to the Ground Phase.

Capital Supremacy – A Tactical and Dynamic Clone Wars Experience

Back on the ground, the fight over command posts starts over, giving the team who just defended their capital ship a chance to make a glorious comeback. As a successful defense bonus, they’ll get a head-start by controlling a majority of the command posts upon returning to the surface, earning reinforcements immediately.

But any progress made by the team attacking the first time around will not be in vain! Should they manage to launch another invasion, any overridden console or destroyed weak point will still be, well, overridden or destroyed.

With dynamic shifts between the open-ended Ground Phase and the attacking or defending of two unique capital ships in the Invasion Phase, players are able to take on a tactical, Clone Wars-era authentic tug of war – where they have the agency to tackle combat scenarios in many different ways.

Geonosis – Pipeline Junction West

At release, Capital Supremacy will be playable on Geonosis’ Pipeline Junction West and the two capital ships. This new location features rolling sand dunes, characteristic cliff formations, areas contaminated with toxic waste from the close-by droid foundries, and a mysterious boneyard where you’ll find the remains of large creatures from across the galaxy.

To summarize: fight in non-linear, high-agency ground battles to control command posts. Gain reinforcements. Rush to one of the pick-up-zones and board a shuttle to invade the looming enemy capital ship. Push through its hangar and hallways to reach its weak points. Arm the charges and hold the lines. Rejoice as the giant nose-dives towards the planet.

That’s how triumph looks like in a game of Capital Supremacy, coming March 26!

Lightsaber Combat Changes Coming to Battlefront II

Star Wars Battlefront II - General Kenobi

With the arrival of the next update we will be making the first of some changes that we have planned with lightsaber combat. For this update we’re going to be focusing more on the stamina system and how that affects the overall feeling and flow of close combat.

STAGGER CHANGES

One of the most visible changes to lightsaber combat is going to come in the form of the removal of the stagger for attacking heroes. In the current version of the game when a hero attacks a blocking hero, the attacker will stagger backwards.

We’ve seen feedback that this is not desired, and we agree. We feel this breaks the flow of lightsaber combat which is usually free flowing. With this change attacking heroes will no longer stagger backwards upon hitting a blocking hero, meaning they can continue to chain attacks until they run out of stamina.

Attacking with a lightsaber depletes a hero’s stamina and once this reaches zero the attacker will not be able to perform any attacks until their stamina regenerates. As a result of this, attacking will now be a lot more strategic as you will be unable to run up to someone and continuously swing your lightsaber. Instead, you will need to think more about utilising your other abilities alongside lightsaber attacks.

As well as this, blocking with a lightsaber also reduces a hero’s stamina. Meaning that nobody will be able to block indefinitely.

While all heroes have had changes made to their Stamina values, we’ve also made some additional changes to Darth Maul, Rey and Darth Vader.

Darth Maul’s attacks will now have a stamina cost associated with them. We will also be adjusting the unlimited stamina abilities of both Rey (Insight) and Darth Vader (Focused Rage). These now give a 50% reduction to stamina costs.

STAMINA OVERVIEW

As part of the changes we’re adjusting the stamina values for every lightsaber wielding hero in the game. The Stamina system is broken down into six separate categories:

Melee Cost

  • This is the amount of stamina required for each swing of the lightsaber.

Blaster Deflect Cost

  • How much stamina is reduced with the deflection of each blaster shot.

Melee Deflect Cost

  • The amount of stamina, per lightsaber hit that is reduced.

Regen Delay

  • How many seconds before stamina regeneration begins to occur.

Regen Speed

  • The speed in which stamina regenerates.

Deflect Spread

  • The angle in which lightsaber heroes can deflect blaster fire.

Overview
Stamina is reduced when:

Defending

  • A hero blocks a lightsaber attack with their own lightsaber
  • A hero blocks blaster fire with their lightsaber

When a hero is out of stamina:

Attacking

  • A hero can no longer attack if they have no stamina, they must wait for it to recharge

Blocking

  • A hero can no longer block efficiently. Any hero that gets hit by an attack that brings their stamina to 0 receives full damage and is caused to stagger

You can check out even more about the new lightsaber combat changes, including each hero/villain’s new lightsaber stats by visiting EA’s community forum right now.

New Star Wars Battlefront II Community Update Released by EA

EA has just released the latest update to Star Wars Battlefront II, which includes updated looks for most of the Clone Troopers and the introduction of Anakin Skywalker (voiced by Matt Lanter). Check out the video above, and some extra information about the new update below!

How to Play as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Battlefront II

Anakin is an extremely powerful lightsaber wielder. While his master Obi-Wan Kenobi is an expert of defensive combat, Anakin is on the other side of the spectrum, with melee attacks second to none in Star Wars Battlefront II. His offensive power with a lightsaber is demonstrated even more when using his guard-breaking and high-damage Passionate Strike.

You’ll also experience The Chosen One’s might with the Force. While focusing to deliver his Heroic Impact, Anakin absorbs a lot more damage. As a matter of fact, any incoming attacks against Anakin will make this Ability even stronger. When released, he sends all surrounding opponents flying with a 360-degree Force push.

Furthermore, using the Pull Dominance Ability, Anakin pulls his enemies in front of him, leaving the targets vulnerable to follow-up attacks. This Ability is especially effective combined with an ally’s area of effect attack.

And to capture Anakin’s care and passion for others, he’s been given a fourth and unique ultimate Ability: Retribution. As Anakin and his nearby allies take damage, his anger builds up, ultimately unleashing a Force choke on all enemies in the area.

Anakin Skywalker’s Appearances, Additional Clone Trooper Legions, and More

Anakin Skywalker is wearing his Jedi Knight outfit by default, with the Jedi Robes as an unlockable alternative. Led by him during the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion is joining the ranks of the Galactic Republic as new clone trooper appearances, too. The Coruscant Guard, missioned with peace keeping on the capital planet with the same name, arrives with this update as well.

Some other updates to the clone army are heading your way, including fixes to current legion appearances, and the opportunity to play as armored officers.

*All updates require Star WarsTM BattlefrontTM II on applicable platform (sold separately), all game updates, internet connection, EA account, and, for console players, Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus membership (each sold separately).

**New heroes are available for Credits earned in-game.

***Appearances available for Credits earned in-game or Crystals.

EDITORIAL – Disney’s Biggest Mistake? EA

Hello there! It is good to be back at Outer Rim News, and I just want to thank Ashley and the team for welcoming me back after a long time frozen in carbonite. I wanted to do something positive for my first article back, but something has just really pissed me off this week, so it won’t be a positive first post back from me I’m afraid. It is a rant about Disney’s biggest mistake since they acquired the Star Wars franchise. I am of course referring to their decision to outsource the video games license to Electronic Arts.

EA has a somewhat tempestuous relationship with the gaming community. They are, arguably, the biggest game development company in the industry, and release some of the most popular (in terms of sales) titles with the likes of; FIFA and Madden getting a yearly release, and Battlefield getting a twice yearly release. There are a dozen or so studios under the EA banner as well creating even more games for the publishing giant. Why the somewhat questionable relationship with the gaming community then? Well, they have a history of rushing titles to release, therefore selling products that are really not ready to be bought by consumers. Secondly, they bloody love a loot crate.

Loot crates are a difficult aspect to try and talk about. Yes, they are optional, but sometimes you are left with either the prospect of dozens of hours worth of grinding to earn enough in-game credits to buy whatever content is hidden behind a loot crate, or spend more of your actual money on a game that already probably costs $60. I know people that will buy FIFA every single year and then spend at least another £150 or so on additional content in the game. Some people also accuse EA of not concentrating on the more important aspects of games, you know, like gameplay, but concentrate on loot crates, or the ever-expanding ‘pay to play’ mobile game market. The biggest example of this in recent memory is the release of the mobile version of the Command and Conquer series. It is ‘free’ to play, but there are numerous options to spend actual money within the game.

So now, onto Star Wars yes? Well, let’s get the most recent issue out of the way first. EA announced this week that they are cancelling the open-world game they had in development. Albeit, it was in early development, yes, but it has still been cancelled for apparently a title that is quicker and easier to make. There is no indication as to what this new, smaller game will be, but when the open-world game was first announced, there was a huge buzz around the potential the game had. This isn’t the first time EA has just cancelled an upcoming Star Wars game without giving much of a reason.

Amy Hennig, who was one of the creative minds behind the Uncharted series just had her game cancelled, which resulted in her leaving EA completely. So that is issue one with EA, the lack of games released.

Star Wars Republic Commando
Star Wars Republic Commando

During the golden period of Star Wars video gaming between 2002 and 2008, we had 18 releases! Not all of them were classics no, but not one of them was a terrible game. The highlights of those wonderful years are; Republic Commando, Knights of the Old Republic 1&2, LEGO Star Wars, and the original Battlefront games. During EA’s governorship over the Star Wars license, which began back in 2013, we have had two games. Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II. The same period, six years, and the only thing EA has to show for themselves is two, quite poorly received Battlefront games.

Are both editions of Battlefront bad games? Not entirely no, and they wouldn’t really be a main focus here if EA had released some other titles. Battlefront 1 lacked content, and was rushed out for release, whereas Battlefront 2 did have more content, but the loot crate controversy completely ruined the sales of the game, and they fell well below target. EA also has the unfortunate record of having the most downvoted comment in Reddit history when they tried to explain why Star Wars Battlefront 2 heroes and villains were stuck behind in-game credit.

Disney purchased Star Wars for one reason; to make money. Which, so far, they have, and lots of it. There could be a lot more though if they ditch EA (the reported contract between the two companies is due to end in 2023), and either go with a publisher who can handle such an iconic franchise, and treat it with the respect it deserves, or go back to the old way of just outsourcing to numerous developers instead of relying on one. Just imagine; CD Projekt making an open-world game, Naughty Dog creating an adventure title, and this one is a bit out there, but it is something I’d bloody love, A From Software, Dark Souls inspired Star Wars game.

The bottom line is, we and our beloved franchise deserve better than Electronic Arts.

What the Future Holds for Star Wars Battlefront II

Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Clone Wars

It seems like we have been reporting on Star Wars Battlefront II more now than we did when the game first debuted. Today’s news comes straight from EA, where the company has provided a roadmap for the game over the next couple of months.

Star Wars Battlefront II in January:

January sees the first appearance of Count Dooku in the game. From the roadmap’s list, we will get him with an additional appearance (skin). We will also be getting a new look for Clone Troopers in January as well, in the form of the Coruscant Guard (skins).

Star Wars Battlefront II in February:

February is going to be an even bigger month for the game! In this month we get the addition of Anakin Skywalker along with a secondary appearance (skin). Clone Troopers aren’t left out either, with the addition of the 501st appearance (skins).

February also sees the release of a new game mode featuring capture points and capital ships. A little bit later in the month you can fight through the Venator-class Destroyer of the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Dreadnaught as part of our new game mode, featuring capture points and capital ship takedowns.

If you haven’t been playing this game, or were turned off about the controversy surrounding the release of the game, then now is the time to make a return, and enjoy one of the best Star Wars gaming experiences around!

Now if we could only get confirmation on Ahsoka…

Have EA Access? Then You can Play Battlefront II for Free!

If you are a current subscriber to EA Access, then you now have access to Star Wars Battlefront II. Gamespot is reporting that the game was just added to EA’s Vault. If you have never played, now is as good a time as ever to give them game a try.

The full game is included in the Vault version, though paid DLC is sold separately. Otherwise, you can play both the single-player campaign and the extensive multiplayer portion to your heart’s content.

Battlefront II’s launch was marred with microtransaction controversy after some fans labeled the game as “pay-to-win.” Developer DICE has since revamped the game’s progression system and continued to add more content.

The EA Access service costs $5 per month or $30 per year, and is exclusive to Xbox One and PC. In addition to playing Star Wars Battlefront II, members can also choose from a host of other EA titles to play included in the price as well.

The Battlefront II Geonosis Update is Out, Now Learn More About It

Last week we got an official trailer for the release of the Obi-Wan Kenobi character, and Geonosis Galactic Assault campaigns. Now that the update is officially out, EA has dropped a new video giving users a better look at the updates and what they mean for you.

Fight as the cherished Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis in the latest Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II update, available now! Control the beastly AT-TE walker on the rugged wastelands, battle as the 212th Attack Battalion, and roam the fields with the STAP and the BARC speeder.

If you haven’t played the game in awhile, I highly suggest giving it another try. The new update gives users the feel of being part of the Battle of Geonosis from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. With the addition of Obi-Wan Kenobi (and General Grievous from a previous update), we now have a good Prequel representation for the game as well.

Star Wars Battlefront II: Battle of Geonosis Game Trailer and More!

EA has released new information concerning their big Battle of Geonosis update, coming November 28, free to all players. The update gives us new maps, new vehicles, new Clone Troopers, and most importantly – Obi-Wan Kenobi!

Check out the new trailer for the update above, and read about it below!

With Obi-Wan Kenobi being present throughout the Star Wars saga, we’ve had no shortage of inspiration to draw from. But it was his skills with a lightsaber and his combat prowess, especially in defence, that we decided to focus upon.

It was important for us that when playing as Obi-Wan, not only would players feel like they are playing as the legendary Jedi Master, but it was also imperative that we capture the person that was often the leader on the battlefront and inspiration to the clones he commanded.

We wanted to capture the essence of Obi-Wan running head first towards a battalion of Droids, using his lightsaber to deflect blaster fire with perfect accuracy , which we see him doing in The Clone Wars™ animated series.

We also wanted to ensure that we captured his expertise as a Force user and we worked to ensure this was reflected within his ability set. We took inspiration from numerous sources, one of which was a battle against Anakin Skywalker. With both Jedi locked in a stalemate, one hand raised against the others. The use of the singular hand would play a key part in the animation on display with one of his abilities.

Here Come the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Microtransactions!

Star Wars: Battlefront II was not quite the juggernaut out of the gate that EA was hoping for this year. Mostly due to fan backlash over microtransactions announced for the game, fans never hopped on board the Battlefront II train.

In an investor call yesterday, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen broke down some of the sales numbers for the game. Battlefront II is trailing it’s predecessor by about 4 million copies during the same time span. The sequel sold about 9 million copies during its launch quarter, whereas the original sold about 13 million. EA had expected about 10 million sales for the game during that quarter.

During an interview with the WSJ, Jorgensen told the magazine that microtransactions would also be making its debut “in the next few months.” EA states that they believe that microtransactions have the ability to “enhance the experience in our games.”

“Going forward, we believe that live services that include optional digital monetization, when done right, provide a very important element of choice that can extend and enhance the experience in our games,” EA said. “We’re committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services.”

All is not bleak though. Jorgensen indicated that he thought the game would sell as many as 3 million more copies during this fiscal year. That would give them a total of 12 million copies sold, which is just 2 million shy of the first games mark during the same timeframe.

EA has said that efforts to keep players coming back is working. During the first three months of release, the game has logged over twice as much as its predecessor during the same timeframe.

Analyst Michael Pachter Optimistic about Star Wars: Battlefront II Sales Rebound

Star Wars: Battlefront II Logo

According to a new article over at CNBC, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter says that EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II should rebound after an underwhelming initial rollout. After EA released the games micro-transaction model, gamers jumped on their social media accounts to protest the upcoming game.

This protest resulted in a release that was less than anticipated by EA. EA reacted promptly by temporarily removing micro-transactions. This coupled with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has led to a boost in sales.

“The sell-off in recent weeks appears overdone,” analyst Michael Pachter wrote in a note to clients Tuesday. “Although Star Wars Battlefront II had a weaker-than-expected debut in terms of its domestic physical sell-through, we believe that the loyalty of the Star Wars fan base, the game’s appeal as a holiday gift, and the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15 will result in sales of the game bouncing back in the December retail month.”

Pachter notes that EA shares have “traded down significantly” since the end of October, EA has managed to recover with a 3% rise in shares. This recovery could either be attributed to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, or the fact that EA has done away with Battlefront II’s micro-transactions.

Thanks goes out to Mike Smith for the heads up on this article.
