Disney to Release ‘Andor’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ on Blu-ray with Featurettes

On April 30, Disney Home Entertainment will release on physical media two more of its Star Wars streaming series.

Star Wars: Andor — The Complete First Season,” and “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi — The Complete Series,” will be released individually on 4K UHD and Blu-ray in collectible packaging.

The news comes after Disney announced plans in February to offload its manufacturing, distribution and marketing of physical media to Sony Pictures Entertainment. Though disc sales have steadily declined industry-wide year by year, the overlap between collectors of 4k and Blu-ray discs and fans of fantasy, sci-fi and superhero genres remains significant. It’s this demographic Disney Home Entertainment is targeting, with new box art, concept art cards and steelbook packaging for these titles.

Neither “Andor” nor “Obi-Wan Kenobi” include deleted material, but they will include a series of featurettes explore the world-building of the former, while a director’s commentary by Deborah Chow caps off making-of materials on the latter.

These titles mark Disney Home Entertainment’s second series of collectors editions, after the 2023 release of seasons one and two of “The Mandalorian.” Both are currently available on the studio’s streaming service, Disney+, but given that future seasons or follow-ups aren’t due for a while (“Andor: Season 2” premieres in 2025, and “The Mandalorian” will next be seen on the big screen) or not at all (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”), the sets and their extras are meant to provide their fans with a stopgap to tide them over.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Complete Series”

Bonus Features:

  • Featurettes: “Duels of Fate: Obi-Wan vs Vader,” “The Dark Times: Villains,” “Designing The Galaxy”
  • Director’s Commentary by director Deborah Chow

“Andor: The Complete First Season”

Bonus Features:

  • Featurettes: “Ferrix Part 1: Imperial Occupation,” “Aldhani: Rebel Heist,” “Coruscant: Whispers of Rebellion,” “Narkina 5: One Way Out,” “Ferrix Part 2: Fight the Empire”

Deborah Chow on Second Season of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, “Never Say Never”

Deborah Chow with Stormtroopers

Last week we shared some quotes from a recent interview with Kathleen Kennedy about the future of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and she was very non-committal about any future for the character. Now in the latest episode of Crew Call, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’s executive producer Deborah Chow acknowledged that the series was originally hatched as a standalone movie. She goes on to say not to close the door just yet…

As far as more Obi-Wan Kenobi? “This was conceived as a limited series; it is closed,” says Chow. However, “There’s 10 more years before New Hope, so never say never.”

There seems to be too much “non-news” about this series for there not to be something in the works. First was Ewan McGregor all over Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, and him coming out at the end just to hype up the crowd. It was almost as if he was scheduled to come out and announce something, but was kind of pulled at the last second.

Then we have Kathleen Kennedy saying not right now, but thinking about it. Now we have Deborah Chow saying, “never say never…” It sounds like something is up indeed at Lucasfilm, but only time will tell.

Would you be interested in a second season of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi? Leave your thoughts in the appropriate places.

Kathleen Kennedy Talks About More Obi-Wan Kenobi

If Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 was any indication, it seemed like most fans want a second season of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. It seemed like Ewan McGregor also wants it, as he came out on the Star Wars Celebration Live Stage to personally thank fans on the last day of the convention. It almost seemed like he wanted to hint at something coming, or try to prove to the powers-that-be, that people wanted more of the series.

Sitting down with EW’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast, the Lucasfilm President talked about the future of Obi-Wan Kenobi…

“I always hesitate to say no to more Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Kennedy said of the Jedi Master on EW’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast. “Maybe we end up doing something that gets incorporated into some of the other stories that we’re doing, or eventually into a movie, but who knows? But right now, it’s still our standard stand-alone limited series.”

She added: “We have no plans for expansion right now.”

Reading into what she is saying, I would think they have some idea of what they want to do and a want to bring Ewan McGregor back as Obi-Wan Kenobi. I think they just don’t have those plans cemented in at the time. We do know that Lucasfilm already has an idea for future content that was not announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, thanks to a few interviews with Dave Filoni.

Stay tuned for more Star Wars news as it breaks!

New Obi-Wan Kenobi Battle Damaged Darth Vader 1/10 Scale Statue from Iron Studios!

The fine folks at Iron Studios have just posted a brand new pre-order on their site. The Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Battle Damaged Darth Vader 1/10 scale statue is a must have for fans of the series and of Hayden Christensen as the Dark Lord of the Sith. The upcoming polystone piece which, arrives second quarter of 2024, will cost you a total of $159.99, with a $32.00 deposit.

Check out the image gallery below, of this awesome statue!

Chasing his old master above the dry lands of a rocky moon with no name, the most powerful and fearsome dark knight of the Empire commands his crew to prepare his ship, and leaves, vowing his adversary him alone. In a fierce lightsaber battle in a labyrinth of rock pinnacles, facing a drained but still determined Obi-Wan Kenobi, that, while focusing on the memories of the young Luke and Leia, motivated to protect them, manages to strike a blow damaging Vader’s helmet and partially revealing a bit of what remained of his human face. Wielding his red lightsaber in his right hand, even though he is hurt in the back, fueled by the Dark Side of the Force, the Sith Lord raises pointed pieces of rocks, ready to throw them at his opponent. Inspired by the sixth and last episode of the first season of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show from the streaming service Disney +, Iron Studios proudly present the statue “Darth Vader – Obi-Wan Kenobi – BDS Art Scale 1/10”, celebrating May the 4th, the Star Wars Day, in a very special way!

Considered the greatest villain in the history of cinema, Darth Vader is the main character in the Star Wars saga by George Lucas. Present in the movies of the original trilogy, in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, in the second prequel trilogy, and the anthological Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, besides the animated series, comic books, and video games, Vader has his dark helmet, armor, and cape, and his noisy mechanical breathing as his outstanding features. Born as Anakin Skywalker, he was a slave until he was 9 years old on planet Tatooine. Rescued by the Jedi called Obi-Wan Kenobi from which he became an apprentice, a deep anger fed by personal tragedies took the then Jedi Knight to the Dark Side of the Force, becoming the apprentice of the evil Darth Sidious. Anakin becomes known as Darth Vader, the iconic villain of the franchise. From then on, he would be responsible for the order of the entire galaxy. Despite everything, there was still some kindness in Darth Vader. The actor Hayden Christensen, who played the role of Anakin in the prequel trilogy, returned as Darth Vader, with and without the armor in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, while James Earl Jones returned to voice the iconic character.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…or more precisely, in May of 1977, movie theaters presented the world phenomenon Star Wars, one of the most successful franchises of all time. To celebrate this date, May 4th became Star Wars Day, due to a pun in English with the iconic phrase “May the Force be with you”, with which fans quoted “May the Fourth be with you”, referring to the release date of the first film.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Holds on to Top Spot in the Streaming Charts for Second Week in a Row

It seems there is no stopping the demand for Obi-Wan Kenobi, as the series stays on top of the streaming charts for the second week in a row.

According to the website The Wrap, Parrot Analytics has shared streaming numbers that indicate Obi-Wan Kenobi has a strong lead over all other streaming series in terms of engagement, with “exceptional” engagement forty times greater than the average streaming series. Comparing the numbers to the week prior, the engagement has grown from 39.2 to 40 this week. Honestly these numbers are a bit of a guess in terms of determining real data. None of the streaming companies provide “honest” streaming numbers, and the only way to evaluate it currently is through the engagement numbers that Parrot Analytics comes up with…

This is surprising considering the nostalgic factor for fans of the Prequels and the hype train for another round of Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader. Disney also hyped the numbers for the first two episode by announcing that the show was the biggest opening of any series in Disney+ history. The numbers supposedly rivaled that of the hit streamer Stranger Things.

With fan demand for the series as high as it is, surely a second season is in the bag at Lucasfilm for this, although no official word has been made. At the end of Star Wars Celebration 2022, McGregor came back on stage unannounced to thank the fans for a great weekend, and made reference to more episodes (check the 3:05 mark of the video below).

Ewan McGregor Thanks Everyone For Making His First Convention Great - Star Wars Celebration 2022

I guess we will see if Disney has official plans for a second season soon enough…

Final Episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi to Get Theatrical Release?

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Some interesting news has made its way across the Holonet concerning the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The website Cineplex has just posted an interesting listing revealing the last episode of the series along with a question and answer session will screen the same day as the episode drops on Disney+, June 22.

Keep in mind that Cineplex is a Canadian theater site, so no word on if/when this could happen for those of us in the United States. It is an interesting move considering that The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett did not get the same treatment. Obi-Wan Kenobi has had much more interest because of the cast and prequels though…

More information as it becomes available, but until then, the information on the site is below.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Writer Joby Harold Talks About Keeping Leia a Secret

The Hollywood Reporter sat down recently with Obi-Wan Kenobi scribe Joby Harold and talked about some of the questions fans have been asking about the series. There is some great information from the interview, and we have taken a few pieces here and there to highlight below. I highly suggest heading over to THR to read the entire article.

WARNING: Information below contains spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi episode IV. Proceed with caution!

Obi-Wan Kenobi from the initial trailer to now has sort of been a bait-and-switch type of a show. I think we were sort of promised a show about the Jedi Master watching over young Luke Skywalker, but after the first episode we quickly realize it is less about Luke, and more about Leia. This has led to much fan uproar over the canonical understanding that Leia did not actually know Ben Kenobi in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Harold though, thinks differently…

“It was very helpful to know where they were going because it answers the question of, ‘Why him?’ So, ‘Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope,’ feels less arbitrary as a choice and a decision now that we know the depth of the history they have together. The context within which Leia says that in A New Hope is now canon, and it’s clear. So it will be articulated as the show continues, but I liked the fact that it helped reinforce and better articulate a little piece of the jigsaw that is already in place. If you watch all of the Star Wars stories in a row right now, you’d be like, “Of course, she’s going to go to Obi-Wan.” She also ends up naming her son, Ben [Adam Driver].”

Fans also feel canon was broken when Reva murdered the Grand Inquisitor. The character appears in Star Wars Rebels, which takes place after the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Does this mean he isn’t dead, or their is another similar Grand Inquisitor?

“I know there’s speculation about that, but I won’t speak to that beyond saying that Rupert is just a champ in his articulation of the character. I love the rhythm of what he does with the voice for a character who’s that physically intimidating. He looks like a tank, but he speaks with such lyricism. So that juxtaposition is unique and interesting, and he’s not the aquiline, thin, sinewy school teacher-y, creepy guy. So I love what he did with the character.”

Finally many fans wonder how someone of Reva’s stature knows that Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker are one in the same.

I love that Reva is this mystery box, so I try to speak to her as little as possible, and I’m going to keep it that way. But the notion of having a character that we don’t know on a legacy show where we do know everything and everybody is part of the fun of the show. So the less said about her, the better, considering there are very few people and places where you don’t know what’s happening.

There you have it. Some interesting information was provided by Harold on a few burning questions by fans. Do these answers satisfy the questions you have? With only two more episodes left in the series, it seems many of these questions will soon be answered… or not…
