Star Wars IMAX Release 2027: A New Hope 50th Anniversary and Starfighter Confirmed

The yellow Star Wars logo stacked above a large blue IMAX logo against a black background filled with white stars.

The galaxy far, far away is preparing for a monumental year on the largest screens possible. According to a recent IMAX investor presentation, the Star Wars IMAX release 2027 schedule is officially locked in, featuring both a historic restoration of the film that started it all and the next chapter in the cinematic saga.

For Star Wars fans, 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of the franchise. To celebrate, Lucasfilm and IMAX are bringing a newly restored version of Star Wars: A New Hope back to theaters, followed shortly by the highly anticipated release of Star Wars: Starfighter.

The Return of the Original: A New Hope 50th Anniversary

The headline news for many purists is the confirmation that the Star Wars IMAX release 2027 calendar kicks off with Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Scheduled to hit IMAX screens on February 19, 2027, this limited-time engagement is set to honor five decades of Jedi, Sith, and Rebels.

While A New Hope has seen various re-releases over the years, an IMAX restoration is a rare event. This 50th-anniversary presentation aims to provide the most immersive viewing experience of the 1977 classic to date. Reports suggest a meticulous restoration process to ensure the film’s legendary cinematography and groundbreaking sound design hold up to the scrutiny of massive premium large-format screens.

This will be the first time the original cut of the film has been seen in theaters 1978. This isn’t counting the re-release in 1981 with the added subtitle. This marks a fantastic opportunity for fans of the original cut to see this version of the film again.

Star Wars: Starfighter Joins the IMAX Slate

The celebration doesn’t stop in February. Just a few months later, the next major theatrical entry in the franchise, Star Wars: Starfighter, will make its grand debut. The investor report confirms that Starfighter is scheduled for an IMAX release on May 28, 2027.

Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, Starfighter has already generated significant buzz among the community. Sources close to the production have praised the film’s visuals, noting that it “recaptures the Star Wars magic” with a focus on high-stakes aerial combat and new corners of the galaxy. Given the title, the film is expected to feature sweeping space battles that are tailor-made for the IMAX format.

A Massive Two-Year Roadmap for Star Wars Cinema

The 2027 announcements come on the heels of the 2026 slate, which is dominated by The Mandalorian and Grogu. That film is set to arrive on May 22, 2026, also featuring a heavy IMAX presence.

By the time 2027 rolls around, Disney and Lucasfilm will have established a consistent theatrical rhythm that fans have been craving since the conclusion of the Sequel Trilogy. The combination of nostalgia via the 50th-anniversary restoration and the innovation of Starfighter suggests a “best of both worlds” approach to the franchise’s future.

For years, fans have debated the best way to experience the original trilogy. While home theater technology has advanced, nothing compares to the scale of an IMAX theater. The decision to put a restored A New Hope into these venues suggests that Lucasfilm is leaning into the “event” status of cinema.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Starfighter in the investor presentation reassures shareholders and fans alike that the theatrical pipeline is healthy. With two major releases in the span of four months, 2027 is shaping up to be the biggest year for the franchise since 1977.

Regal Robot Walrus Man Prop Replica Bust Coming to Archive Collection

Regal Robot Walrus Man prop replica bust 1:1 scale Ponda Baba Archive Collection signature edition.

Star Wars collectors, prepare your credits. Regal Robot has officially announced the next centerpiece for their prestigious Archive Collection, and it’s a deep-cut favorite from the Mos Eisley Cantina. Launching Tuesday, February 24th, the Regal Robot Walrus Man prop replica bust brings Ponda Baba to life with unparalleled authenticity.

As the Regal Robot team kicks off 2026 by striving to reach “far and wide,” Regal Robot is doing exactly that by diving into the Lucasfilm archives to deliver a museum-quality piece.

Scanned from the Original Movie Prop

This is not just another statue; it is a 1:1 scale historical recreation. To ensure the ultimate level of accuracy, the team at Regal Robot 3D laser-scanned the original prop mask used in Star Wars: A New Hope at the Skywalker Ranch Archives.

Standing nearly 24 inches tall with its included display stand and torso section, the Regal Robot Walrus Man prop replica bust is a massive presence. Each piece is hand-crafted in their New York studio, featuring:

  • Hyper-Realistic Detail: Hand-applied hair and layered hand-painting to match the 1977 aesthetic.
  • Translucent Tusks: Modeled directly from the original mask with internal detailing.
  • Dual Display Options: Collectors can display it as a full bust with the chest section or as a standalone head/mask for a “prop-store” look.

The Ben Burtt Signature Edition

This release is part of a highly limited Signature Edition, with only 150 pieces being produced. Each bust includes a metal plaque hand-signed by the legendary Academy Award-winning sound designer, Ben Burtt.

Burtt is the man responsible for the iconic vocalizations of Ponda Baba, which he famously created using recordings of actual walruses. Having his signature on this piece bridges the gap between the visual and auditory history of the character.

Pricing and Availability

Given the strict 150-piece limit, this “wanted man” is expected to sell out quickly.

  • Pre-order Date: Tuesday, February 24, 2026
  • Price: $2,499
  • Payment Plans: Regal Robot is offering a special up-to-12-month payment plan with adjustable down payments to help collectors secure this archive piece.

Don’t wait until you’re in a bar fight in the Outer Rim, mark your calendars for the 24th to ensure you don’t miss out on this piece of cinema history.

This was a fun figure for the team to develop with all of the detail in the instruments. We packed him with his iconic kloo horn instrument, which has a twisting neck like a bassoon. He also comes with two additional bonus instruments, the fizzz and the fanfar. Some of our favorite detail in this figure is the portrait sculpt since Bith have such interesting faces! New ANH Star Destroyer Available for Pre-Order from EFX

Hard core Star Wars collectors, get your wallets ready! EFX is set to deliver one of the most iconic ships in cinema history to collector’s doorsteps. The company is releasing a prop replica Star Wars: A New Hope Star Destroyer.

Keep in mind that this isn’t for every fan, unless you have an extra $16,000 laying around. This is a four foot filming miniature based on the designs for the first movie. Once you order it takes 3-6 months for the company to build and get to your doorstep.

Check out all the details and images below, and if you feel so inclined, order from EFX’s website.

EFX is proud to debut our new line of custom built, screen-accurate prop replicas for the ultimate Star Wars collectors! Our first offering in this exciting new line is the full scale, 1:1 replica of the Imperial Star Destroyer 4-foot filming miniature as seen in Star Wars: A New Hope.  In 1981 the name of this fearsome warship, The Devastator, was revealed in the NPR presentation of Star Wars: The Radio Dramas Special Edition.  A new 8-foot Star Destroyer (The Avenger) was made for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, but the original 4-foot model was re-detailed and used in some scenes as well!

This Star Destroyer model is seen in the very first scene of the Star Wars saga! This Imperial cruiser is Darth Vader’s ship that intercepts Princess Leia’s Blockade Runner, the Tantive IV, en route to delivering the stolen plans of the Empire’s dreaded Death Star. Her “counselor” ship was disabled by heavy turbo fire and is drawn in by its tractor beam to the hangar bay in the underside of the ship.

The parts of the EFX Star Destroyer prop replica were developed with a thorough a review of the screen used prop with additional photos and measurement reference obtained in the Lucasfilm archives. EFX was able to identify and find most of the actual prop kit parts.

It is interesting to note that due to the tight budget and time restraints, only the port side and the bottom were fully completed since those were the only parts of the ship that were actually filmed. However, the starboard side was eventually redressed for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.  To this day, the original studio prop has areas that are still not completed! With the help of the ILM Model Supervisor who actually worked on the model, we were able to complete the detailing of for the EFX replica!

These props will be available for pre-order in very small quantities per production run crafted in our model shop in the USA and not a mass production factory. Each prop is meticulously built and finished by hand. The prop is made with an aluminum and acrylic sub-structure with the detail parts cast in resin. Each detail piece is individually cast from a master made from the original prop kit part and then carefully finished and painted by hand.  Some original molds that were unable to be located, were 3D modeled from the examination of the actual prop, and then printed and cast in resin.

The lighting effects of this model are carefully included to illuminate the engines and launch bay as seen in Star Wars: A New Hope.

This incredible replica of the Studio Scale Star Destroyer, The Devastator, filming miniature will certainly be the centerpiece of your Star Wars collection!
