Star Wars Games Getting the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Treatment!

Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter

Microsoft has announced a new batch of games getting the backwards compatibility treatment for Xbox One! The older games announced include six Star Wars games! A few of the games are well worth dusting off and playing again if you haven’t played them in awhile.

Check out the full list of Star Wars games below!

April 26, 2018:

  • Star Wars: Battlefront
  • Star Wars: Battlefront 2
  • Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
  • Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter
  • Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
  • Star Wars: Republic Commando

To play original Xbox backwards compatible games, just insert your original Xbox disc for any of these games into your Xbox One console if you still have them. If you own them digitally, that will also work. Many of these games can also be purchased from the Xbox Store.

Why Starfighter Assault Is The Highlight of Battlefront 2

So, the Battlefront 2 Beta has ended now that the (delayed) deadline of October 11th has come and gone. As someone who was lucky enough to secure one of the randomly dispersed email codes for the closed alpha, I thought the game was solid. Of course, this is probably jaded by the fact I love the saga (duh). Hell, I played the original game despite its lackluster combat depth for over 100 hours. However, it’s one of the key new features of the game that’s really persuaded me to buy the sequel at launch instead of wait for a sale like I did the previous installment and that’s one of the plethora of new game-modes, Starfighter Assault.

Now don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the boots on the ground combat in the closed alpha and the vast improvements it’s made compared to the first game in terms of strategy, gameplay, classes and unlocks, but the slew of game releases over the last few years has left me a bit petered out on the whole FPS concept. It’s ridiculous fun, but I’m not yet ready to sink another hundred hours into another shooter. So, when I opened the game I was expecting to be entertained, but maybe be a little bit bored of the concept. As someone who hated the starfighter gameplay in the previous game, I was met with a pleasant surprise.

Starfighter Assault, despite not being the game’s “flagship” mode, and probably having the least content in the beta, easily made up most of the 8 hours of gameplay I got from the demo. Probably because I don’t play many flying games, the concept was unique enough to interest me much more than the ground combat. For those unaware, the beta version of Starfighter Assault sees a team play as the rebels attacking a Star Destroyer that’s under construction, first taking out two Imperial Cruisers, then flying into the cavernous scaffolding of the shipyard to blow up the shield generators in typical Star Wars fashion. The plucky group of 12 rebel players must then damage the clamps connecting the Star Destroyer to the shipyard to expose the reactor and deal damage to it, all the while being attacked by the enemy team of 12 playing as the Empire.

Sound design is on point, as is the visuals – just like in the last game. Unlike the previous installment though, the smattering of turrets placed all over the map and on the advancing rebel and Imperial cruisers adds even more realism to the experience, allowing you to shoot these larger ships out of the air with enough teamwork and proton torpedoes. Thanks to this, the maps feel so much more alive than the barren starfighter maps of the previous game, especially at launch where ships flew around, essentially, an empty sky only shooting at each other. The fact that I enjoy that there’s more things shooting might seem fickle, but it really does make everything feel more action packed, frenetic and complex.

The main reason I disliked starfighter combat in the previous game, especially when more detailed maps like that beautiful assault on a Star Destroyer in an asteroid field were added, though was the controls. It all felt very clunky. Trying to make precise movements with your ship was impossible since a brief move of the mouse or control stick caused your little fighter to continue to slide slightly afterwards. Furthermore, to stand any chance of hitting the fighter you were chasing, you had to keep the target in the middle of your screen for a few seconds to get a “lock on” and then shoot or bomb them. This is all meant you had to wait to take out enemies, making combat less fast paced and feel much slower and more boring. It also meant that it was fairly easy to take out enemies, making dogfights feel less rewarding and more trivial. Thankfully, the new game completely overhauls this control scheme. Now you just aim your reticle inside the circle near to your target and fire. The lock on system remains but now it’s only used for firing missiles. Controlling your starfighter, especially the snappy interceptors, feels great, removing the awkward sliding from the first game and replacing it with a tighter scheme that allows you to pull off precise movements. You’ll be needing these tight movements to be able to pull off dodges which are no longer assigned to the push of a button, further making you feel accomplished when you dodge that pursuing TIE’s torpedoes successfully.

Screenshot from the Beta

Continuing this trend of overhauling the foundations laid by the previous game, the starfighter classes have also been expanded. Unlike boots on the ground combat there are only three, but each one has just enough different attributes to make it feel unique. The interceptors allow for fast, sharp maneuvers and feature powerful blasters at the cost of health and the bombers are able to dispense volleys of powerful proton torpedoes, ion blasts etc at the cost of being slow and a bit more unwieldy to pilot (though this never felt as uncontrollable as the original for me). Fighters offer a middle ground, having fairly powerful weapons and a respectable amount of health and maneuverability. Each class has their own strengths, but unlike the ground combat classes, I found myself happily switching between them. None of them, to my casual eye at least, felt particularly over or underpowered and they were all huge fun to control and experience. Each team has slightly different variants of these classes, replacing one or two abilities, like switching out the X-Wing’s health restoring astromech for the TIE’s speed boost. More variation would have been nice but the changes are enough to make each ship feel at least somewhat unique.

The map showcased in the beta is also fantastic, perfectly blending large open space for fast paced dogfighting with tight corridors and spaces to navigate and cover to duck behind. It begins with a nice open space to allow players to get to grips with controls without having to dodge around tight corridors and the space means players aren’t concentrated in one small area so there’s less incoming fire to avoid. Of course, you still have the Imperial cruisers to fly behind for cover should you so need it. The fight then transitions into a narrow corridor of scaffolding with obstacles littering the ceiling, floor and walls to avoid. This focuses the action down a small path, forcing you to engage in quick dogfights and bombing runs but you lack the space to make complex dodges (unless you want your little A-Wing to become a little ball of flames against the walls). Finally the fight moves to around the Star Destroyer. Thanks to the clamps overhead, you still have tight spaces to maneuver through and obstacles to avoid. Fighting is still focused around a small area so your skills are put to the test but now you have the added space to make larger dodges and evasions again, allowing you to flex your piloting muscles in the mode’s climax.

Overall, the brief snippet of the game-mode I’ve played so far has me converted. I used to think I would hate the starfighter combat of this game but now it’s shaping up to be the part I’m probably most excited to experience fully when it releases on November 17th 2017.

EA to Showcase New Battlefront 2 Shipyard Map at Gamescom

Avid fans of Star Wars Battlefront will probably know that more information about the latest game, Star Wars Battlefront 2, will be unveiled at Gamescom, an upcoming game expo that will run from August 22-26. However, just recently EA announced some more of the game’s schedule for the event.

In addition to a new trailer, the coverage – which EA says will focus on starfighter gameplay – will also feature a demo that will be livestreamed on August 21st at 5.30PM BST (12.30PM EST). Participants in the livestream will be playing the upcoming multistage gamemode “Starfighter Assault” set in the original trilogy on the map “Fondor: Imperial Shipyard”, showcasing fighters, bombers and ships specific to heroes.

If any of the gameplay interests you then don’t worry: you’ll soon have the opportunity to play it. The demo for the game begins in October and the gamemode and map debuting in the livestream will be playable alongside the “Assault on Theed” map that’s already been shown. Both of these will feature starfighter combat, but the latter will also feature the boots on the ground combat that the series focuses on. EA is promising better starfighter combat than the game’s predecessor with superior controls, deeper customization and a new class based system to create role based team play. From what I played in the closed alpha this looks to be the case, at least before my V-Wing collided with the top of a tower because I wasn’t paying attention.

About Star Wars Battlefront 2:

Star Wars Battlefront focuses on the fast frenetic battles that you love in the star wars saga. Fight dozens of troopers alongside memorable heroes like Darth Vader each with unique skills and attributes. Chances are you’ve already played the first one and Battlefront 2 promises to deliver where it fell short. You want a story mode? You want clone troopers? You want deeper gameplay? The team at DICE seems to be trying to please the fans with this one (unless you wanted those fun 32v32 battles from the originals).

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Top 5 Wishlist

Battlefront 2 Top 5 Wishlist

Star Wars Battlefront released back in 2010 was a great game. Not incredible and not poor but enjoyable. It did a lot of things right, mainly by completely immersing you in the action. You truly felt like you were there on Hoth, Endor, etc.., with the sounds of the various weapons and vehicles spot on. I really did feel like I was fighting alongside my fellow Rebels against the Galactic Empire, and in turn, I truly felt like a Stormtrooper wiping out the Rebel scum who had invaded the Death Star. Battlefront was missing a fair few elements though, which stopped it moving into the incredible Star Wars game category (such as KOTOR and Republic Comando) and this will bring us nicely to the point of this article, my Star Wars Battlefront 2 top 5 wishlist!

EA Definitely Delivering New Star Wars Battlefront Game in 2017

Star Wars Battlefront game

If you are a fan of Battlefield, then this news will be disappointing.  If you are a fan of Star Wars Battlefront, then this news will be awesome!  Speaking at the Nasdaq 35th Investor Program earlier today, EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen told reporters that the companies priority next year would be a new Star Wars Battlefront game.

Speaking at the Nasdaq 35th Investor Program earlier today, Jorgensen stated that EA “won’t have another Battlefield back for a couple of years. Next year we’ll have Battlefront, the Star Wars game.”

It also seems that the new game will focus more on the current state of the Star Wars galaxy featuring content from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Episode 8.

Next year we’ll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that’ll make the opportunity much larger.

Are you going to be playing this game when it hits (supposedly fall of 2017)?  Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!

New Star Wars Battlefront Coming Next Fall?

New Star Wars Battlefront

Thanks to the latest EA investor’s call, we have confirmation that a new Star Wars Battlefront game is in development and will be released next fall.  Asked by an analyst about the timing of the next Battlefront game, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen confirmed that the sequel is coming “a year from now.” That suggests the game will be released next fall.

“We’re working very hard on making sure that is an extremely deep and engaging offering,”

This new bit of information gives us a better timetable for release.  Earlier this year EA said that the game would be coming between April and December 2017, which is very vague time frame.

Unfortunately no information was given on the exact setting for the game.  The original game released last fall, was set in the original trilogy time period.  One would hope that EA and DICE would take advantage of the post trilogy movies and create the game around the current setting of the Star Wars galaxy.  Especially before heading back tot he prequel era of Star Wars.

What are your thoughts about the upcoming game?  As always you can start the discussion in the comment section below!

GAMESCON: Star Wars Battlefront Death Star Details

Battlefront Death Star Details

Stay on target! Major Star Wars Battlefront Death Star Details were unveiled recently at Gamescon in Cologne, Germany. EA just announced that new weapons and Star Cards will be added, along with a hotly anticipated new game mode, Battle Station, which will be part of the DLC release.

In similar suit to the game modes like Extraction from the Outer Rim expansion, and Sabotage from Bespin, this new mode will have three stages. In the first phase, rebel starfighters will face off in space against Imperial TIE Fighters, with an objective that mirrors the current space game mode, Fighter Squadron. However, have patience young Padawan, because this is only stage one. If enough TIE Fighters are destroyed, Y-Wing support will arrive and rebel forces can focus their attacks on bringing down the main Star Destroyer. Phase Two brings the battle straight to the main corridors of the Death Star. Rebel forces will need to secure a priority droid directly inside the legendary space station, while fending off Imperial troops and villainous bounty hunters. The final phase takes place back in space, where players can try to blow up the Death Star. Details have been scarce, but it’s just been announced that the Red-5 X-wing of Luke Skywalker will be featured, along with the TIE Advanced Darth Vader.

Fans will rejoice with the addition of everyone’s favorite Wookiee, who will be added to the squad of playable Heroes. Chewbacca will have a super enhanced Bowcaster, which we can only hope is akin to Han Solo’s unique Rapid Fire ability. Meanwhile, the menacing Trandoshan bounty hunter, Bossk will be added to the side of Villains. He’ll be equipped with a blaster with infrared sight, along with grenades and health regeneration upon a single kill.

Fans have eagerly awaited more details surrounding the upcoming expansions. EA and DICE have confirmed the release date for the Death Star DLC in September, and the Rogue One: Scarif is slated for December. Season Pass
holders will gain access to the new features two weeks before the general public. With the Death Star DLC jam-packed with new features, we can’t wait to explore the new maps and what’s on the horizon.

GAMESCON Report: New VR Missions Coming to Star Wars Battlefront!

In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we’ll learn how the Rebellion steals the plans to the Death Star. But before that happens, you’re going to take the fight to the Empire — in a Rogue One-related mission, in your X-wing, and in immersive VR. As revealed today at Gamescom,Rogue One: X-wing VR Mission is coming to Star Wars Battlefrontthis fall. It will be available for free to all owners of Star Wars Battlefront and a PlayStation VR headset on PlayStation 4, and is being developed in full collaboration with Lucasfilm to ensure an authentic link to the highly-anticipated film. The experience promises to be enveloping, both visually and aurally, and intense — especially with a Star Destroyer looming literally overhead. “These things are huge and powerful with a belly full of TIE fighters,” James Svensson, producer at Criterion Games, told PlayStation.com. “Being in a fight with a Star Destroyer is not a situation an X-wing pilot wants to find themselves in, but that’s where the player ends up. The player will have to keep their wits about them, with intense battle ensuing from every direction, to keep them and their wingmen alive as they complete a critical mission for the Rebellion.”

Also coming to Star Wars Battlefront is the Death Star expansion, with its new game mode Battle Station, as announced at Gamescom. It will be fully armed and operational in September, and more details were disclosed today, including the new mode’s three different phases and objectives. In phase one, you’ll pilot X-wings and A-wings against TIE fighters and TIE interceptors. The goal is to destroy enough TIEs until Y-wing support can weaken a Star Destroyer’s defenses. Once vulnerable, Rebel starfighters can attack to bring the Star Destroyer down. (For those of you pro-Empire, fear not: you’ll be able to fly TIE fighters and interceptors and take down Rebel scum.) Phase two finds you fighting on-foot inside the Death Star in areas inspired by the original trilogy; the Rebels are on mission to extract a droid from within the technological terror, and new heroes Bossk and Chewbacca are playable. Finally, phase three puts you in Luke Skywalker’s X-wing during the final attack on the Death Star. Just keep an eye out for Darth Vader in his TIE Advanced. (And maybe don’t switch off your targeting computer.)
