The upcoming Disney+ animated series is set to push the boundaries of the galaxy far, far away, specifically regarding the sinister agents of the Empire. In a recent update from the creative team behind the show, it has been confirmed that the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Inquisitors will be the most horrifying and “creepy” iterations of the Jedi hunters ever depicted on screen.
A New Level of Horror for the Inquisitorius
While fans have seen the Inquisitors in various media, ranging from the calculating Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels to the relentless Trilla Suduri in Jedi: Fallen Order, the team at Lucasfilm Animation is taking a decidedly darker approach for Maul – Shadow Lord. Speaking on the tone of the series, supervising director Brad Rau and writer Matt Michnovetz emphasized that these versions are designed to feel like “horror monsters.”
One of the standout figures in this new lineup is the mysterious Marrok. First introduced as a mercenary in the Ahsoka live-action series, Marrok’s presence in Shadow Lord serves as a prequel to those events. In this era, he is a fully-fledged Inquisitor, utilized by the Empire to hunt down the former Sith Lord on the planet Janix.
The creative team noted that Marrok’s movement and blocking were specifically handled to evoke the feeling of a slasher villain. He moves with a slow, deliberate pace that can suddenly shift into supernatural speed, acting more like an apparition than a traditional warrior. This “horror monster” aesthetic is intended to make the Inquisitors a genuine threat, even to a combatant as seasoned and deadly as Maul himself.
Marrok and the Eleventh Brother Take Center Stage
The trailers for the series have already given fans a glimpse of the carnage to come. Alongside Marrok, the Eleventh Brother has been confirmed as a primary antagonist. This avian-like Inquisitor brings a unique visual flair and a level of intimidation that fits the show’s “grungy” and “messy” art style.
The decision to include Marrok was a deliberate choice by the showrunners. Given his eventual fate and the mysterious Nightsister energy he expelled upon his death in Ahsoka, Shadow Lord provides a perfect opportunity to explore his origins. His role as a foil for Maul is particularly interesting; while Maul is a creature of raw power and rage, these Inquisitors represent a chilling, clinical terror that the Empire uses to maintain its grip on the galaxy.
Why the Empire is Hunting Maul
Set roughly a year after the events of The Clone Wars and the Siege of Mandalore, Maul – Shadow Lord finds the titular character at a crossroads. Having been cast aside by his former master, Darth Sidious, Maul is attempting to rebuild his criminal empire, Crimson Dawn, from the shadows of Janix.
However, the Emperor has not forgotten his former apprentice. By sending the Inquisitors after him, Palpatine is effectively treating Maul like any other “surviving Jedi” threat. This creates a fascinating dynamic where a “bad guy” is fighting “worse guys.”
The series aims to answer long-standing questions about why Maul remained in hiding during the height of the Empire’s power and how he managed to evade the Inquisitorius for so long. With the show’s premiere scheduled for April 6, 2026, fans will not have to wait long to see these terrifying new villains in action.
