Star Wars Outlaws Xbox Game Pass Launch Doubles Player Base: Is It a Masterpiece Now?

Star Wars Outlaws protagonist Kay Vess with her companion Nix and the droid ND-5 in an open-world setting.

When Star Wars Outlaws first launched in 2024, it arrived with the weight of a galaxy on its shoulders. Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, it promised the ultimate “scoundrel fantasy.” While the initial reception was generally positive, technical hurdles and a crowded release schedule prevented it from reaching its full potential. However, the narrative has shifted dramatically in early 2026.

According to recent data from TrueAchievements and Alinea Analytics, the Star Wars Outlaws Xbox Game Pass debut has effectively doubled the game’s player base on consoles in just a matter of weeks. The “Game Pass effect” has breathed new life into Kay Vess’s journey, proving that the game is finding its rhythm with a massive new audience of Star Wars fans.

The Numbers Behind the Surge

The statistics are staggering. Reports indicate that nearly 600,000 new players have jumped into the game since it arrived on Microsoft’s subscription service on January 13, 2026. On the very first day of its Game Pass availability, over 100,000 players launched the title, immediately making it one of the most popular additions to the service this year.

In fact, Star Wars Outlaws managed to narrowly outperform other heavy hitters like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II and Death Stranding Director’s Cut in terms of monthly player acquisition. This surge has nearly equaled the game’s total lifetime sales on the Xbox platform in a fraction of the time, signaling that the barrier to entry, not the quality of the game, was likely the biggest hurdle for many fans.

Why Fans are Flocking Back to Outlaws

It isn’t just the “free” price tag of a subscription that is driving this growth. Ubisoft has spent the last year meticulously refining the experience. For the fans who are just now picking up the controller, they are entering a version of the game that is vastly superior to the launch version.

Key updates have addressed the most common criticisms:

  • Stealth Overhaul: The mandatory “instant-fail” stealth sections that frustrated players at launch have been reworked, offering more freedom to choose between a quiet approach or a full-blown blaster fight.
  • Expanded Content: Two major story expansions, Wild Card (featuring Lando Calrissian) and A Pirate’s Fortune, have added hours of high-quality content, new systems, and legendary Star Wars locations.
  • Combat Polish: From free-aiming on speeder bikes to improved enemy AI and weak-point mechanics, the “scoundrel” gameplay feels tighter and more rewarding.

A Turning Point for Ubisoft

For Ubisoft, the success of Star Wars Outlaws on Xbox Game Pass is a vital “win” at a time when the company has been vocal about the challenges facing the Star Wars brand in the gaming space. While the company previously attributed slow sales to a “lukewarm reception” of the franchise, the sheer volume of Game Pass engagement suggests that the appetite for a narrative-driven, open-world Star Wars adventure is still incredibly high.

As Kay Vess and her loyal companion Nix continue to climb the “Most Played” charts, it’s clear that Star Wars Outlaws is having its “redemption arc” moment. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the Outer Rim or a newcomer looking for a solid open-world adventure, there has never been a better time to jump into the cockpit of the Trailblazer.

More Information Released About Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

If the game’s panel at Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019 didn’t give you enough information, Respawn Entertainment video game director Stig Asmussen sat down with website GamingBolt and gave a little more information.

While we didn’t get an actual gameplay trailer, Asmussen revealed some detail on what to expect while playing the game. He says that the game will focus on a smaller cast of characters (many of the characters we haven’t been introduced to as of yet), with Asmussen likening to a “man vs wild story”.

“We do have more characters to reveal,” said Asmussen when asked about the more “lonesome” vibe that the game’s reveal trailer seemed to give off. “The trailer showed Cere. We knew we weren’t going to be able to make a game that has huge crowds in it. I don’t want to worry about things like creating crowd tech. We decided to make a story that’s more ‘man versus wild.’ That allowed us range to go to different places and explore different places. It’s not just Cal versus the environment, but also Cal versus the elements. To a certain extent, the Empire versus the elements as well.”

The first trailer (below) only gave us a look at cut scenes and gave us a quick look at what the story is going to be about. Hopefully future trailers will finally show us some of the gameplay footage, so that fans can understand exactly what to expect when playing this game.
