Stellan Skarsgård Talks Andor on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

On May 8th, Stellan Skarsgård made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he discussed his role in the critically acclaimed Star Wars series, Andor. Colbert, who is clearly a fan of the show, praised it as “one of the best Star Wars things ever made,” highlighting its unique focus on character development and sacrifice over traditional sci-fi spectacle.

Skarsgård on Luthen Rael’s Complexity

During the interview, Skarsgård spoke about his character, Luthen Rael, a key figure in the Rebellion’s formative years. Without giving away too many spoilers, Skarsgård shared insight into Rael’s ruthless decision-making and the harsh realities of fighting against the Empire. “I suggest that we should take him out,” Skarsgård said, referring to a fellow conspirator who might become a liability. This blunt pragmatism is part of what makes Luthen Rael such a compelling character—someone willing to make the hard choices for the greater good.

A Focus on Grit and Realism

Colbert emphasized that Andor feels different from any Star Wars project before it, noting its emphasis on interpersonal relationships and moral dilemmas over galactic battles. Skarsgård agreed, praising the series for its grounded storytelling and mature approach to rebellion. “It’s not really about Star Wars,” he noted. “It’s about these characters and what they are doing, what they are willing to sacrifice, their interpersonal relationships.” This shift in tone has been widely praised by fans and critics alike, making Andor a standout addition to the Star Wars universe.

Andor Season Two Finale Teases

While Skarsgård remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, you can tell his excitement for the second season was evident. With Andor Season 2 already streaming on Disney+, anticipation is high for the series finale. If Skarsgård’s comments are anything to go by, fans can expect more gritty storytelling and deeper explorations of the characters that define the rebellion.

Andor’s Stellan Skarsgård Talks Season 2 and Hints at Release Date

Andor may not have had the hype of a Kenobi or Ahsoka when season one released on Disney+, but its impact was felt by the Star Wars fan community. The show turned out to be one of the best (at least in my opinion) Star Wars series released on the streamer to date. Since then we have been waiting patiently for season two and according to actor Stellan Skarsgård, we might be waiting a little while longer.

Games Radar caught up with Skarsgård, and talked with him about the upcoming second season and what fans can expect from it.

When asked what fans can expect from the second season of Andor, he said, “It’s the last season of it. It ends where Rogue One starts so it’s up to that point. I think it will be very good as already the first one was satisfying for me because it’s sort of Star Wars for grown-ups.”

“It’s a more realistic and complicated society that they’re living in and the claustrophobia of the fascist regime is palpable,” Skarsgård continued. “I think we have a good season ahead of us.”

When asked about a potential release date for the season he responded with, “It will probably be out towards the end of the year or early next.”

So there you have it! If I were a betting man, I would put my chips down for this one to release in 2025. Filming has been completed, but Lucasfilm has several shows to release this year including Star Wars: Acolyte, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Star Wars: The Bad Batch is currently in release so there really isn’t much room for the series this year.

Star Wars Disney Plus Filming Updates

According to a new post from Production Weekly, several Disney Plus Star Wars shows have received updated filming schedules. It seems that Star Wars: Ahsoka will start a month later than anticipated and Star Wars: The Acolyte moves a good ways down the production slate from May to November 2022.

Of course we new that Star Wars: Andor Season 2 would start in the Fall, thanks to actor Stellan Skarsgård’s interview from this past week.

Disney Plus Star Wars Production Current Schedule for 2022:

  • STAR WARS: AHSOKA (w/t STORMCROW) – April 2022 (was March 2022 before)
  • STAR WARS: ANDOR 02 (w/t PILGRIM) – Fall 2022
  • STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE (w/t PARADOX) – May 2022 to November 2022
  • UNTITLED STAR WARS PROJECT (w/t GRAMMAR RODEO) – June 2022

The most interesting is the last one listed working under the title Grammar Rodeo. Could this be a play on words for Yoda? Possibly a Tales of the Jedi type show? There have been several shows that Lucasfilm has announced as under development, including a Star Wars: Lando show. I don’t know if the name “Grammar Rodeo” would necessarily be indicative a Lando series though. If I were a betting man, I would lean towards something involving Yoda, and trying to capitalize on the baby Yoda/Grogru craze currently taking over pop culture.

There is also the possibility that this show will focus on Yoda during the times of the High Republic. This is the current continuity that Lucasfilm seems to be pushing with their comics and novels. Surely a live-action tie-in would give more credence to the other material.

I guess only time will tell…

Stellan Skarsgård Confirms a Second Season of Andor

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

While this probably comes as no surprise to Star Wars fans, Andor, the prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will begin filming a second season this Fall according to cast member Stellan Skarsgård. What’s interesting is that season one is nowhere on the schedule for Disney Plus at this point.

While talking to the Swedish publication Dagens Nyheter about a guest role on The Simpsons, Skarsgård revealed his filming schedule in the year ahead when it comes to big-budget sci-fi. Here’s what he said, roughly translated:

“We start with Dune: Part 2 in July. And then in the Autumn, it’s time for the second season of the Star Wars series Andor… I do not know when they will start broadcasting it. It will take some time, so that it does not take too long between Season One and Season Two.”

Interesting information if this proves to be true. Although coming from an actor involved with the production, it sounds like you can take this one without the normal “grain of salt.”

About Andor:

Andor is an upcoming Disney Plus series created by Tony Gilroy. It is a prequel to the Star Wars film Rogue One, following the character Cassian Andor five years before the events of the film. Diego Luna executive produces and reprises his Rogue One role as Cassian Andor
