The Reason for the Color of Luke’s Lightsaber at the End of ‘The Last Jedi’

Luke Skywalker's Original Lightsaber

We are entering SPOILER territory here folks. If you haven’t seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi, then look away!

We have all been wondering exactly why Luke chose to manifest himself on Crait with Anakin’s blue lightsaber in his final duel with Kylo Ren. Heck we have even speculated on our Podcast here before. Now though, Rian Johnson has spilled the beans to IGN, given us the answer as to the reason for Luke having Anakin’s lightsaber in his hands again.

“[Luke] is basically tailoring this projection to have maximum effect on Kylo,” Johnson explained. “He knows that Kylo’s Achilles heel is his rage, and so that’s why he kind of makes himself look younger, the way Kylo would’ve last seen him in their confrontation at the temple, and that’s why he decided to bring Kylo’s grandfather’s lightsaber down there — the lightsaber that Kylo screamed at Rey, ‘that’s mine, that belongs to me.’” As far as Johnson’s concerned, Luke believes that Anakin’s lightsaber will have a much more visceral impact on the erstwhile Ben Solo than Luke’s own green blade.

But why did Kylo fall for his uncle’s Force Illusion when he saw Anakin’s lightsaber split in half right in front of him? Because, Johnson pointed out, he didn’t actually see it.

“We as an audience saw that… The truth is, we see the lightsaber split in half — Kylo sees a blinding flash of light and is knocked unconscious, and then Rey takes the lightsaber away before he wakes up,” he said. “So if you really want to dig into it and get an explanation, you can say that he doesn’t 100 percent know what happened to the lightsaber.”

Toys R' Us LEGO DJ Mini-figure

If you have been patiently waiting on the Toys R’ Us exclusive LEGO DJ mini-figure from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, then you might want to head out to your local TRU. Originally rumored for a January 1st release, some collectors have started seeing them on shelves. Reddit reader Flynnlives89 snagged a couple from his local TRU in Iowa. He then said that after he purchased them, the store manager took the rest off the pegs until January 9th.

Neal Scanlan Talks About Creating that “Green Milk” Scene in The Last Jedi

By now you have most likely seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you haven’t then be warned before continuing, because this article does contain spoilers.

Thala-Siren from Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Thala-Siren from Star Wars: The Last Jedi

One of the classic scenes in the film involved Luke milking some sort of animal on Ahch-To, which he then decided to drink in front of Rey. While it was a gross scene, Mark Hamill pulled off one of the funniest scenes in the film with his reaction to the green milk.

The animal responsible for giving the green milk is known in Star Wars lore as a thala-siren. Think of them as “sea cows”. The species is indigenous to the planet Ahch-To, and routinely hit the shores of the islands for a little sun-bathing. The creatures have udders similar to cows, which when milked, provide a green milk substance.

How the filmmakers decided to give the thala-siren life is an interesting question, and one best left for Lucasfilm’s special effects wizard Neal Scanlan. He talked with the website Nerdist, to give us a better understanding of how the effect was achieved.

They created the entire puppet at Pinewood from foam latex. The thala-siren has a mechanism on the inside so her head could tilt forward “like a submarine hatch.” Scanlan said that allowed two puppeteers to get inside the creature—one in the front and one above him. “One would operate the shoulders and the flippers at the top and the other person would operate the belly and the milking mechanism or the udder mechanism at the bottom,” he said.

The Last Jedi Still Raking in Cash at the Box Office!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi finished its second weekend with a domestic tally of $100 million dollars! Taking into account that the film most likely suffered from Sunday being Christmas eve, and the numbers are even more eye-popping!

The film has now grossed $800 million globally, and it hasn’t even opened in China. China’s opening will be January 5th.

According to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter, the film is expected to end its theatrical run somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.6 billion! That will fall about $400 million short of Star Wars: The Force Awakens $2 billion run. It would still be in the top 5 highest grossing of all time, edging out Marvel’s The Avengers.

The Force Awakens was an outlier, the likes of which we may never see again, and to compare any movie, even a Star Wars film, to that performance is unfair given the buildup to that film’s monumental release. At a gross of nearly $750 million worldwide and a near even split between the North American and international gross after a little over a week in theaters, The Last Jedi is by any measure a great success, and the passionate debate over pros and cons of the film itself serve only to show the continued passion that fans have for this historic film series,” says comScore analyst Paul Dergaragedian.

This news looks good for the finances of Lucasfilm. lt’s probably time to start planning that Solo: A Star Wars Story pr campaign now…

Mark Hamill Regrets Voicing Opinion about Luke Skywalker

Since the release (and in some cases before) of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill has been quoted as having issues with the way Luke Skywalker has been portrayed in the film. Fans who did not like the movie, used this as a rallying cry to change the minds of those that did like the film.

Today via his official Twitter account, Mark Hamill expressed his regret for voicing his initial feelings in public, and praises Rian Johnson’s efforts on the film. Hamill is undoubtedly happy with the way Star Wars: The Last Jedi turned out, and hopes this puts an end to any further reports to the contrary.

But as you can probably guess, the naysayers have come out of the woodwork to poo poo his apology, saying that he is only apologizing because his Disney overlords want him to apologize. You can read the tweet below…

Of course, feel free to debate on our various social media sites.

The Last Jedi King of the Box Office for a Second Weekend!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

In a bit of fairly obvious news, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still decimating its competition at the box office with $24.6 million on its second Friday. This news leads analysts to believe that the movie will make $102 million over the four day Christmas weekend. For now, it’s earned a total of $321.2 million which is great. This could mean that the film could hit the $400 million domestic total by Monday!

The film faces some stiff competition this weekend as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is expected to earn $43 million by Monday and a total of $60 million since opening earlier this week. Pitch Perfect 3, meanwhile, had a $10.6 million opening day for a total of $35 million by Christmas. The Hugh Jackman film The Greatest Showman is underperforming with $20 – $25 million.

So just how much money have you contributed to Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Personally, I have seen it twice, with a third viewing coming next week. Let us know how many times you have seen it in our comment sections on our various social media feeds.

Rian Johnson Responds to Negative Criticism of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Rian Johnson

Unless you have been living under a rock the past week, then you no doubt know of the large outcry among Star Wars fans of the latest addition to the saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Whether it was Luke’s characterization or “Finn’s unimportant storyline”, audience response has been less than positive. With sites like Rotten Tomatoes having low audience scores, but high critic scores, it seems that this film is divisive, to say the least.

Twitter user sparkie237 asked Rian Johnson about the polarizing effect that this film has had on fans. Rian Johnson responded with an answer that will either make you like him more, or dig the hole deeper for him.

Just for clarity’s sake, I thought the film was great. I also thought it was relevant to post this because of the effect that it is having on fandom right now. If current events prove anything, you will no doubt be posting your thoughts in the appropriate places.
