The Acolyte Season 2 Yoda: Leslye Headland Wanted the Jedi Master to be a “Bad Guy”

Showrunner Leslye Headland speaking during an interview, juxtaposed with a close-up of Master Yoda from the finale of The Acolyte, teasing his role in Season 2.

The first season of The Acolyte left Star Wars fans reeling with a shocking cameo in its final moments: the back of Master Yoda’s head. While his appearance was brief, it might have set the stage for a massive shift in how we view the legendary Jedi Master, if Headland had her way. In a recent, wide-ranging interview on The George Lucas Talk Show, showrunner Leslye Headland pulled back the curtain on her vision for the future, and it involved a version of Yoda that might not sit well with those who view him as an infallible beacon of light.

Yoda: The Architect of a Cover-Up?

The biggest bombshell from the interview was Headland’s confirmation that Yoda would be deeply involved in the Jedi Order’s political machinations. When asked point-blank if Yoda helps Vernestra Rwoh with her cover-up of the events involving the Stranger and the fallen Jedi, Headland replied, “For sure. Yeah”.

This revelation positions Yoda not as a hero coming to save the day, but as a “bad guy” in the sense that he is complicit in the lack of transparency that eventually leads to the Order’s downfall. Headland was quick to defend this interpretation of the character, noting that this morally gray behavior is actually consistent with earlier Star Wars media. “By the way, he does it in advance,” she said, referencing his actions in the Clone Wars animated series. “Don’t come at me in the comments because he does it in Clone Wars, so I don’t want to hear about it”.

For fans, this suggests that The Acolyte Season 2 Yoda would be a character defined by the “certain point of view” that has long been a staple of Jedi philosophy, one that prioritizes the reputation of the Order over the absolute truth.

Correcting the Canon: Ki-Adi-Mundi and the “Legends” Defense

Headland also took the opportunity to address some of the more vocal criticisms from the first season, specifically the inclusion of Ki-Adi-Mundi. Many fans were upset that his appearance seemed to contradict established birth dates from older Star Wars materials. Headland explained that she consulted with Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo before including him.

According to Headland, Hidalgo gave the green light as long as Mundi wasn’t depicted as being on the High Council yet. She further clarified that the specific birth date fans were citing came from a 2002 CD-ROM game that is now considered “Legends,” meaning it is not part of the official current Disney canon. “I’ll take the L,” she joked, but firmly stood by the decision to use the character in a way that fit the new narrative.

Other Major Takeaways and High Points

The interview wasn’t just about the lore; Headland shared several other fascinating tidbits about the production and her personal life:

  • Qimir’s Status: Headland confirmed that the fan-favorite character Qimir was not a “true Sith,” adding another layer of mystery to his origins and his connection to Darth Plagueis.
  • Mother Koril’s Survival: Fans wondering about the fate of the witches of Brendok received a major update: Mother Koril definitely survived the fire.
  • The “Modesto 1976” Mantra: During filming, Headland used the mantra “We’re in Modesto, California in 1976” to keep the crew focused on the original spirit and inspirations of George Lucas, rather than just reacting to the finished films.

As the conversation surrounding The Acolyte Season 2 Yoda grows, it is clear that Leslye Headland was not afraid to challenge the status quo. By leaning into the character’s more secretive and political side, she was going to setup a story that explores the institutional rot of the Jedi in a way that would undoubtedly have kept fans talking for years to come.

Star Wars: The Acolyte Trailer Breaks Lucasfilm Record?

Lucasfilm is reporting that the release of the Star Wars: The Acolyte trailer has broken records for their digital-only Disney+ series. The company claims that since the release of the trailer for The Acolyte, it has garnered 51.3 million views in its first 24 hours.

Digging into those numbers, the YouTube trailer currently has 7.4 million views, and the trailer on X has 7.5 million views. As for Facebook and Instagram, well I can’t see those numbers, but if it is similar across all social media platforms you can expect similar views on each of them. I haven’t seen numbers for TikTok and the trailer is not on Threads. This equals a total of about 29.7 million (without TikTok’s number).

Could they be counting interactions where people have uploaded the trailer to their own social media accounts? Possibly. YouTube does give them insight to that, because the video would be marked as a copyright violation by YouTube’s systems. Is that enough to get it to 51.3 million? I don’t know, I guess we will just have to trust Lucasfilm on this one.

The Acolyte | Official Trailer | Disney+

In any case, I am excited for the new series and eagerly counting down the days to June 4.

The trailer introduced several new characters, and gave fans their first look at the High Republic era — 100 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and previously explored only in publishing and animation — in live-action. In addition, the official key art for The Acolyte was revealed alongside the trailer, and it was announced that the series will debut June 4 on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere.

In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems….

‘The Acolyte’ Showrunner Leslye Headland Talks About the Show and Her Love of the EU!

Following the release of the first official trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte, showrunner Leslye Headland is making the rounds to talk about the show and give some insight into some interesting tidbits behind the scenes.

Starting off the round of interviews, Headland spoke with StarWars.com (hey, how do we get a chance to talk to Leslye Headland?) about the show and the difference between it and George Lucas’ take on Star Wars.

(Center): Mother Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith) in Lucasfilm’s THE ACOLYTE, exclusively on Disney+. ©2024 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.

The series is a love letter to some of Headland’s favorite martial arts sagas and samurai films, like Come Drink with Me and Yojimbo, with a fighting style crafted after wushu. Headland goes on to discuss her surprise at the ability of actors Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, and Carrie-Anne Moss (along with the stunt team) to do much of the hand-to-hand combat scenes and fights.

Headland revealed that she grew up reading Star Wars adventures in the Extended Universe and that we will see many Easter eggs and things from the EU that we haven’t seen in Star Wars live action yet.

The Acolyte will be the first time fans will get to see the High Republic character Vernestra Rwoh in live action. The character is played by Rebecca Henderson. Headland said her favorite part of the trailer was when Rwoh opened the door with the wave of her hand.

Next up on the circuit was Collider. The site asks about the footage from this first trailer and if it was just taken from the first few episode or a little something from every episode.

Collider asks about the scene at the end of the trailer where the Jedi all pull out their lightsabers. He asks if that scene is a one-off in the series or will that be the norm for the Jedi throughout…

I highly recommend checking out both StarWars.com and Collider to read the entire interview to get even more information than what is talked about here. If you are on the fence about watching this show, maybe one of these interviews will sway you one way or the other. In any case, will you be watching Star Wars: The Acolyte? With the debut of the official trailer, an official poster was revealed as well, which you can check out below. The directors for each episode were also revealed and it seems each of the four directors were given two episodes. Showrunner Leslye Headland will direct the first two episodes of the series. I honestly thought she would do more than two, but it will be interesting to see different takes on the show, since this is a new franchise within Star Wars.

Trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Coming Soon?

With recent reports of the Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte debuting this June, it should come as no surprise that with just a few months out, marketing for the series would start to ramp up. No marketing blitz for a series would be complete without a trailer to go with it, so it should come as no surprise that according to scooper Cryptic HD Quality, a trailer is currently being put together for the show.

If you are wondering, Cryptic HD Quality has a proven track record in the scoops game, so I would say this is most likely true. Given that we are only three months away from the supposed release date, it also just makes sense.

Even though reliable sites like Collider have reported that the series will debut June 5, Lucasfilm has not officially commented or released that information.

Cryptic also reports that the runtimes for each episode are nowhere near the rumored sixty minutes that have been making the rounds on the Internet. He says it fluctuates a lot, and they are typically between thirty to forty-five minutes in length. He also states that since we are a few months out, those time could change.

Star Wars: The Acolyte Will “Challenge” Ideas Around The Force According to Star Amandla Stenberg

Rumor has it that Star Wars: The Acolyte will debut on Disney+ in June, and fans have been clamoring for any information surrounding the series. The series takes place at the end of the High Republic Era setting up the Prequel era. Rumors surrounding the series suggest that the show will tell the story of how the Sith rose to power to take control during the Prequel era.

C Magazine has conducted a nice interview with Amandla Stenberg and the actress admitted she’s “been feeling a little more trepidation than I thought” about joining the Star Wars Universe. When last we saw Stenberg, she was decked out in her Padme Amidala outfit from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, showing off her love for the Star Wars franchise.

The article gives us a good deal of insight into the series as confirms that her character, a Jedi Padawan is the “Acolyte” that the name of the series is referring to. She also goes on to give us more insight into the show.

“In the context of the Star Wars universe, it’s a time of great peace, theoretically,” she says of the High Republic era.

“It’s also a time of an institution, and it’s a time in which conceptions around the Force are very strict. And I think what we’re trying to explore within our show is when an institution has a singular conception of how power can be used.”

“We try to provide a lot of different perspectives and answers to that question. The idea is to kind of honor the ethos of Star Wars and ideas around the Force and also challenge them, hopefully harmoniously.”

Star Wars: The Acolyte ventures into uncharted territory, exploring the dark side of the Force in the High Republic era. With an ensemble cast and a compelling storyline, it promises to captivate audiences with its mysterious and thrilling narrative.

The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Carrie-Anne Moss, Margarita Levieva and Joonas Suotamo.

New Report Suggests ‘The Acolyte’ To Debut this Summer

A new report from the website Collider, suggests that Star Wars: The Acolyte will drop this summer on Disney+.

Set 50 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom MenaceStar Wars: The Acolyte will follow a former Jedi Padawan, and her one-time Master as they fall into an investigation of sinister crimes in an ever-changing galaxy.

The series also boasts a massive, and massively-talented, ensemble cast led by Amandla Stenberg. They will be joined by Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae as a Jedi Master, and Joonas Suotamo as a Wookiee Jedi named Kelnacca. Also in The Acolyte‘s cast are Jodie Turner-SmithManny Jacintoand Charlie Barnett.

The show does have a connection to Star Wars: The High Republic in that Rebecca Henderson, initially announced to be playing a Mirialan Jedi, would in fact be playing an older version of Vernestra Rwoh, one of the more prominent characters in Phase I and III of the books, and an all-around fan-favorite.

I believe this show is what Lucasfilm will use to determine if there is a future for The High Republic in live action. Should this series turn out to be a success, then you can guarantee this will open up many doors for that era in live action, most undoubtedly a cinematic turn as well. Will the show be a success? I guess we will find out this summer!

Star Wars Disney Plus Filming Updates

According to a new post from Production Weekly, several Disney Plus Star Wars shows have received updated filming schedules. It seems that Star Wars: Ahsoka will start a month later than anticipated and Star Wars: The Acolyte moves a good ways down the production slate from May to November 2022.

Of course we new that Star Wars: Andor Season 2 would start in the Fall, thanks to actor Stellan Skarsgård’s interview from this past week.

Disney Plus Star Wars Production Current Schedule for 2022:

  • STAR WARS: AHSOKA (w/t STORMCROW) – April 2022 (was March 2022 before)
  • STAR WARS: ANDOR 02 (w/t PILGRIM) – Fall 2022
  • STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE (w/t PARADOX) – May 2022 to November 2022
  • UNTITLED STAR WARS PROJECT (w/t GRAMMAR RODEO) – June 2022

The most interesting is the last one listed working under the title Grammar Rodeo. Could this be a play on words for Yoda? Possibly a Tales of the Jedi type show? There have been several shows that Lucasfilm has announced as under development, including a Star Wars: Lando show. I don’t know if the name “Grammar Rodeo” would necessarily be indicative a Lando series though. If I were a betting man, I would lean towards something involving Yoda, and trying to capitalize on the baby Yoda/Grogru craze currently taking over pop culture.

There is also the possibility that this show will focus on Yoda during the times of the High Republic. This is the current continuity that Lucasfilm seems to be pushing with their comics and novels. Surely a live-action tie-in would give more credence to the other material.

I guess only time will tell…
