New Interview with J.J. Abrams Reveals Why He Decide to Come Back for Episode IX

After Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams was done with Star Wars. He set out to reinvigorate the franchise and start a brand new trilogy for other directors to shape. At the time Rian Johnson was slated for Episode VIII (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and Colin Trevorrow for Episode IX. Fast forward a few years and things changed a bit.

After the death of Carrie Fisher, which no doubt required a change to the Episode IX script, Colin Trevorrow departed, and Lucasfilm quickly turned to the director that brought the franchise back from dormancy – J.J. Abrams.

In a new interview with the website Fast Company, Abrams opened up about returning to the galaxy far, far away, and dealing with multiple visions into one cohesive finale.

“I wasn’t supposed to be there. I wasn’t the guy, ya’ know? I was working on some other things, and I had something else that I was assuming would be the next project, if we’d be so lucky,” Abrams revealed when asked how he felt about being brought in to helm Episode IX following Colin Treverrow’s sudden departure.

“The whole thing was a crazy leap of faith. And there was an actual moment when I nearly said, ‘No, I’m not going to do this,'” Abrams recalled, “I was trepidatious to begin with, getting involved, because I love Star Wars so much and felt like it was . . . . It was almost, on a personal level, a dangerous thing to get too close to something that you care that much about.”

And to ask to have that happen again, I felt a little bit like I was playing with fire. Like, why go back? We managed to make it work. What the hell am I thinking? And there was a moment when I literally said, “No,” and Katie [McGrath, Abram’s wife and co-CEO of Bad Robot] said, “You should do this.” And my first thought was, has she met someone? And then I thought, she’s usually right about stuff. And when she said it, I think that she felt like it was an opportunity to bring to a close this story that we had begun and had continued, of course. And I could see that even though the last thing on my mind was going away and jumping back into that, especially with the time constraints that we were faced with…

Merging separate visions for the trilogy and wrapping up not only it, but the entire saga as well proved to be a tough job. J.J. handled it in a way only he could.

I had some gut instincts about where the story would have gone. But without getting in the weeds on episode eight, that was a story that Rian wrote and was telling based on seven before we met. So he was taking the thing in another direction. So we also had to respond to Episode VIII. So our movie was not just following what we had started, it was following what we had started and then had been advanced by someone else. So there was that, and, finally, it was resolving nine movies. While there are some threads of larger ideas and some big picture things that had been conceived decades ago and a lot of ideas that Lawrence Kasdan and I had when we were doing Episode VII, the lack of absolute inevitability, the lack of a complete structure for this thing, given the way it was being run was an enormous challenge.

Retconning some of Star Wars: The Last Jedi doesn’t bother Rian Johnson, as he stated in a recent interview. In fact Rian was excited to see what Abrams was going to do with Episode IX, and didn’t want to know ahead of time, although the two did speak briefly.

Knowing that Rian took Star Wars: The Last Jedi in a bit of a different direction than what he and Kasdan envisioned, came with its on set of hurdles. However, J.J. feels confident in the upcoming film.

I feel like we might’ve done it. Like, I actually feel like this crazy challenge that could have been a wildly uncomfortable contortion of ideas, and a kind of shoving-in of answers and Band-Aids and bridges and things that would have felt messy. Strangely, we were sort of relentless and almost unbearably disciplined about the story and forcing ourselves to question and answer some fundamental things that at the beginning, I absolutely had no clue how we would begin to address. I feel like we’ve gotten to a place—without jinxing anything or sounding more confident than I deserve to be—I feel like we’re in a place where we might have something incredibly special. So I feel relief being home, and I feel gratitude that I got to do it. And more than anything, I’m excited about what I think we might have.

Clearly we can expect something exciting for the upcoming film, and just a mere days away from the first trailer, the anticipation is building.

Rian Johnson on What to Expect for Star Wars Episode IX

Rian Johnson

Josh Horowitz from MTV News recently had a chance to chat with Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson at CinemaCon, and asked the director about his expectations for the upcoming ninth film in the Star Wars saga.

Of course his answer probably reflects thoughts of fans around the world. There was also a question about J.J. Abrams retconning some of what Rian did with the last film, and Johnson addressed that as well.

You can check out the complete interview in the embedded video below.

Promo Artwork for Star Wars Episode IX Leaked?

Keep in mind that some people aren’t fans of spoilers, so remember that when sharing this article over social media…

Before you get all hyped, the following image could be a fake, but it is a well designed fake if it is… We are just a couple of weeks away from an official trailer and title reveal (supposedly) at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, but it seems that someone has let the cat out of the bag a tad bit early.

Website ComicBookMovie.com has their hands on an image that is currently making the rounds that gives us a great look at characters from Star Wars Episode IX, including C-3PO with Chewie’s bandolier and bowcaster? The image also gives us our first look at The Knights of Ren, new droids, new aliens, new characters, and a new TIE-Fighter model.

Now, before the typical cries of “Fake!” begin, it’s important to note that this isn’t a theatrical poster. Instead, it’s the sort of thing you’d find being sold in stores or adorning toy boxes. In other words, it’s promo art put together with live-action imagery, but still very spoilery when it comes to reveals!

Proceed with caution.

More From Oscar Isaac About Wrapping Up the Star Wars Saga

Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac)

Oscar Isaac is currently making the rounds for his new film Triple Frontier with Ben Affleck and Charlie Hunnam. Of course any opportunity that presents itself with an actor in the Star Wars universe, will always be fair game for a few questions about the galaxy far, far away.

A new interview with Metro News, gives us just a little bit of interesting news about the upcoming final film in the Star Wars saga. According to the quote from Isaac, he and John Boyega have the most scenes together this time, and have much more to do in this film, than they had in previous ones.

Check out the quote below…

Presumably you were in London shooting the last in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Does it feel like a family reunion?

It absolutely is. To the point that when we were finishing, the thought that, ‘Oh my God, that’s it, we are not going to be together like this again, ever’ was really emotional. I never did a TV show or anything where I had a recurring role — and you don’t know where the story is going but you know you are in it. It was a big challenge. But it’s also really fun to have three films to develop a character over. I think the one thing I can say [about Star Wars: Episode IX] is that it has been the most fun for me, particularly working with John Boyega because we have just had so much more to do together and we just really connected in a great way. It was really a wonderful way to finish it for me because John was the first person I met right when I screen-tested. It was just with me and him. So it just felt like a real full-circle thing.

What was in the Footage of Episode IX Shown to Disney Shareholders?

Yesterday was Disney’s big shareholders meeting where Bob Iger tells everyone how well Disney is doing financially, and gives glimpses of the future. Part of that future was announcing the opening dates for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, but one of the bigger pieces of news was that shareholders at the meeting got to see a glimpse of Star Wars Episode IX.

Of course, that footage will not be made public, but someone attending the meeting shared a tweet about what he saw, giving us an excellent description of the scenes.

SPOILERS AHEAD… If you don’t want to know, then don’t continue on!

Perhaps the biggest news was the fact that Vader’s helmet is making a return. If you remember back to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, one of Kylo’s motivations to stay with the dark side of the force, was talking to his grandfather’s burnt helmet.

The stormtroopers getting blown up in a hangar bay is sort of par for the course in Star Wars, but the blockade runner was interesting. It seems the Resistance (or Rebellion) is using anything and everything to help in the plan to destroy the First Order.

Oscar Isaac Says People Will be Blown Away by Episode IX

Oscar Isaac is currently doing press for his upcoming film Triple Frontier starring Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam and the aforementioned Isaac. The Associated Press caught up with Isaac and of course got the usual Star Wars question in. The reporter simply asked Isaac to give his opinion of the film.

It was the most fun it’s been. There was just an energy and a looseness and excitement to the whole production. And knowing that this was the conclusion of not only our time there but the nine stories, these nine episodes of the Skywalker Saga, it’s incredible. And I think people are gonna be just blown away.

Mark Hamill Talks Disappointment with the Way Luke was Treated in Sequel Trilogy

In a new interview with Den of Geek about the second season of Knightfall, Mark Hamill talks more about his disappointment with the the way that filmmakers have handled the character of Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy. He also shares his disappointment with the fact that the door on Luke Skywalker being reunited with old friends Han Solo and Leia Organa was closed at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

However, Hamill has made it clear that he doesn’t want fans to weaponize his comments against the filmmakers by jumping to the conclusion that he hates the new trilogy. He also comments on the direction of Star Wars under Disney’s regime.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter last year that the schedule for Star Wars releases had been too densely packed, a view Hamill shares. ‘In our day, it was three years apart. Now they’re two years apart, with an independent movie (Rogue One, Solo) in between. I say to the executives at Disney, “Really? Han Solo five months after our movie? Give it a rest!” They say, well, we have to keep the schedule clear for Mary Poppins.’ He feigns outrage. ‘But I can be mouthy, because you know, what are they gonna do, fire me?’

One reason that the original three will never reunite.

Some decisions still rankle, though. He remains shocked by Han Solo’s fate: slain by his own son and Luke’s nephew, the powerful Dark Side warrior Kylo Ren (formerly known as Ben Solo) in the sequel trilogy’s opening installment, The Force Awakens. ‘I just thought, Luke’s never going to see his best friend again. You look at it in a self-centered way. I said that it was a big mistake that those three people would never reunite in any way. I guess I was wrong, because nobody seems to care! I have to stipulate that I care, but it didn’t really seem to affect the larger audience. Luke, Han and Leia will never be together again, and I’ll probably never get to work with Harrison again. Then the second thing was that they killed me off. I thought: oh, okay, you should push my death off to the last one. That’s what I was hoping when I came back: no cameos and a run-of-the-trilogy contract. Did I get any of those things? Because as far as I’m concerned, the end of VII is really the beginning of VIII. I got one movie! They totally hornswoggled (tricked) me.’

The most interesting comment is in the part that is bold above. “I got one movie!” This leads me to believe that Luke Skywalker will have a minimal role in Star Wars: Episode IX.

He’s made his peace with any unfulfilled expectations. ‘Listen, I never expected to come back. We had a beginning, a middle, and an end. That’s what I said: why mess with it? It’s not something that worries me, because it’s all about the new generation, as it should be.’

Some changes had to be made, however. ‘They had me walking by 3PO, not even acknowledging him. I said: “I can’t do that! He (The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson) said, “Okay, go over and do whatever.” So I went over, and I did whatever. They say it in the script: “Forget the past, kill it if you have to”, and they’re doing a pretty good job!’

As always, leave your thoughts in the appropriate places.

J.J. Abrams Talks The Last Jedi, and the Impact on Star Wars Episode IX and More…

Star Wars Episode IX Production Wrap Photo

J.J. Abrams was at the 2019 Oscar Wilde Awards, which was presented at Bad Robot and was of course asked many questions about Star Wars Episode IX while on the red carpet for the event. Of course we have the proverbial “meat and potatoes” part of the interview right here for you to digest.

Abrams was asked if the backlash aimed at Star Wars: The Last Jedi had any sort of impact on his plans for Star Wars Episode IX. “No, I think that every movie is its own movie and, obviously, this is a trilogy. We brought to that movie all the passion and hard work that we would have no matter what. I think the story speaks for itself.”

Abrams expressed his excitement about Star Wars Episode IX before revealing what he hopes fans take away from it. “You’ll have to determine that yourself, but I really can’t wait for you to see it. There are a lot of words that we all hope that you’ll feel and, obviously, the biggest, most important one, I think, is satisfied.”

J.J. was also asked about directing Billy Dee Williams. “I met him once before, and he is such a sweet guy, but I have got to tell you… I have such respect for him. We had a great time and he was wonderful. Everyone on set noticed this aura around him. He is really an incredible man and an incredible actor.”

As for when we will get a title announcement, Abrams was mum on that. I guess we will be waiting just a little longer for that piece of information.

Mark Hamill Talks Episode IX Filming

During a new interview conducted by Entertainment Weekly with Mark Hamill, the actor talked about the very strict security tactics used when reading the script for Star Wars: Episode IX. Mark also indicated that he had yet to film most of his scenes for the film.

“I still have to go over and do [Episode IX],” Hamill said. “Most of the parts I have coming up beside Star Wars are voiceover — there’s one big one, very high profile, I can’t announce now, that I’m really excited about. You know how it is these days, every time you sign NDAs. I remember back when I read the first Star Wars [script], I was like, ‘Wow, that’s the goofiest thing I’ve ever read.’ I gave it to my best friend to read, and I said, ‘What do you think of it?’ He said, ‘It’s really wild, it’s crazy, can I give it to Meredith?’ ‘Sure, go ahead.’ It went around to all my friends. Of course back then nobody cared. Nowadays it’s like working for some secret deep state government organization, like being in the CIA. They’re going to send rewrites over to Prague on this dark red paper that gives you a headache to read.”

He continued on about the strict security protocols in place for an actor to read the Episode IX script.

“They’re going to fly [the rewrites] over with somebody from the company,” Hamill said. “They’re going to come and give it to me and wait for me to read it before I give it back. So no pressure! You can’t even keep it overnight. But that’s the way it is now.”

Kevin Smith Talks Visiting Set of Star Wars Episode IX

Kevin Smith was a guest on Good Morning America this morning and mentioned a little trip he took to the set of Star Wars: Episode IX. The portion about the set starts at 4:54 in the video above. A bit of a warning though, some of the stuff before that part can be a little crude, so you may want to fast forward to the bit about Star Wars.

“Number one, J.J.’s doing the Lord’s work, man. This movie looks fantastic. It’s a year away, but man it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I’ve seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I’ve ever seen in my life. The dude’s not directing a movie, it’s like he’s directing a small country. The thing is so massive.”
