Advanced Review: Star Wars Adventures 20 from IDW Publishing

Star Wars Adventures 20 Cover

This month brings the close of IDW Publishing’s latest trilogy of Clone Wars era stories, so of course it’s convenient to end it with a story including everyone’s favorite moody Jedi Master-in-training Anakin Skywalker, as well as the all powerful Master Yoda. The Separatists’ presence in Wild Space is a mystery that Master Skywalker is sent by Master Mace Windu to uncover, but while on the planet Retta he’s surprised by Master Yoda who is also there to accompany him due to a presence felt there through the Force.

While trying to sneak around Separatist forces led by the evil General Flebek, our heroes run into an old friend of Yoda’s named Kreeda, who’s the last of a race called the Segredo. We discover that he’s been on this planet using a secret power to hide himself and others from the war currently raging in the galaxy. Anakin contemplates how this ability could be used to the Republic’s advantage by making Kreeda a spy, but is quickly interrupted by General Flebek and his droids.

Anakin is able to trick the opposing forces and take them all out before the refugees can be discovered and Yoda decides not to tell anyone what he and Anakin discovered.

IDW has done a great job of bringing us fun adventures that everyone can enjoy, and they don’t disappoint here. Any fan of The Clone Wars TV series will instantly find things to like here. Nothing beats when Master Yoda gets involved in missions for the Republic, and the lesson that Anakin has to learn here about the innocents that suffer during times of war, is something that everyone can take to heart.

We also get another Dispatch from Wild Space which includes a story about Jedi Barriss Offee who’s sent on a mission to seek out an old book in an ancient temple. She has to call on her faith in the Force to see her through to the end, but after obtaining the book only to have it turn to dust in her hands we all learn a lesson together: it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. This issue was definitely a winner and everyone should head to their nearest comic shop and pick up a copy.

Be on the lookout next month for an all new adventure starring Luke and Han with issue #21!

Advanced Review: Star Wars Adventures 19 from IDW Publishing

Star Wars Adventures 19 Cover

This month’s release from IDW Publishing brings us Star Wars Adventures 19, which is the second in a trilogy of Clone Wars era stories that began with last month’s adventure starring Padme and Jar Jar.

In the Crantori system we open on a new planet, Horain, where a battle is raging. We find Captain Rex is pinned down alone and needing backup. After calling for backup from General Skywalker, the call is answered by none other than General Obi-Wan Kenobi, who is filling in for Anakin while he deals with his own droid problem.

Obi-Wan and Captain Rex vs. Battle Droids – Star Wars Adventures 19 (art by Mauricet)

We find out that Captain Rex went back and rescued some local children and was cut off from his company in the process. With Obi-Wan’s help they fight their way back through the battle droids to get to the evacuation point. After a deflected blast from Kenobi’s blade causes damage to battle droid B1-0516 (Bats), we discover that the damage has actually caused the droid to have a “conscience” and defect to the clone trooper and Jedi’s side.

After creating a distraction and causing Bats to get caught and taken in by his fellow droids for analysis, we see that Obi-Wan has organized a plan for the droid to get inside and create a ruckus, allowing enough of a distraction for Kenobi and Rex to surprise attack the droid forces, using a stolen AAT. Our heroes are able to rescue Bats, wipe out the droids, and get back to General Skywalker and company with a new friend and a stolen enemy tank that can be used against the Separatists.

We also get a short story from CR-8R about a battle droid who falls off of a transport and is stranded on a planet called Opop Hibbedit. He’s then forced to travel by foot across treacherous domain to get back to his squad, narrowly avoiding getting eaten by the local creatures. The takeaway from the story is supposed to be that everything is about the journey and not the destination, although I’m not really sure what the point is here since the battle droid ends up falling off the transport again in the end and repeating the cycle.

Captain Rex vs. Destroyer Droids – Star Wars Adventures 19 (art by Mauricet)

This was definitely a very easygoing entry in the Clone Wars series, but a somewhat satisfying one at that. Getting to see General Kenobi get the Star Wars Adventures treatment was definitely thrilling, but the true standout was the great idea of seeing what it would be like for a battle droid to wake up and realize he was the bad guy. I find that most of the Tales from the Wild Space stories are fairly skippable, and the one in this issue was pretty much on par with the others.

Next week brings us the final installment of the recent prequel era Star Wars Adventures and stars Anakin and Master Yoda!

Advanced Review: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Graphic Novel from IDW Publishing

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Graphic Novel

IDW Publishing is doing a fantastic job with their Star Wars license, providing a young audience with unique stories and and more youthful take on a galaxy far, far away. Wednesday, you will have the opportunity to purchase a new version of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back, when IDW releases their young audience take on the film in comic book format.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Graphic Novel by IDW Publishing

The book like most comic book adaptations of movies, faithfully follows the film with some of the less important scenes cut for length. My issue with all film adaptations is how quick things move from scene to scene. It doesn’t give the book time to pull you in. This book suffers from some of those same issues, but this is Star Wars so I can’t complain too much, especially when it is so beautiful to look at.

In my opinion the books strength comes in the form of its fantastic artwork. The character designs are faithful to the actors in the film, giving the art an almost caricature type feel. For instance in the image below you can look at General Rieekan and actually see actor Bruce Boa. The art takes Boa’s most prominent features (nose, brow) and exaggerates it to give it that caricature feel.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Graphic Novel by IDW Publishing

The caricature look, hits well on most characters in the book, with a couple of misses. In fact I love it so much that I feel like the artwork alone will be enough to pull in reader in, but I understand that art is very subjective. Art alone is not enough to make this a successful book.

Writer Alessandro Ferrari takes the film and does a great job slicing and dicing the story up, into a tale fit for 80 pages of sequential art. Ferrari takes great care in keeping key character moments (such as Han and Leia’s emotional argument in the hallways of Echo Base) that are important to characters arcs for the entire trilogy.

One sacrifice that had to be made was the entire first meeting between Luke and Yoda. In the film, this was a humorous first look at the Jedi Master that was secretly testing Luke from the first moment they met. Yoda’s offbeat wackiness in the film, setup a nice surprise moment for Luke, that is totally missing from the book. While it wasn’t overly important for the purpose of this adaptation, it was one of my favorite memories from the film.

The book skips over this scene entirely and instead gives us Luke standing on his sinking X-Wing fighter turning to see Yoda, and then it is off to Jedi training for him. There are several instances like this throughout the graphic novel, but it is entirely understandable why sacrifices had to be made.

Ultimately, this book is about giving young readers a chance to read about Star Wars, or introduce them to a movie that holds a special place in many people’s hearts. It is easily digestible (took me about 15 minutes to read), so a younger reader should be able to get through it in about 30 minutes or so.

This would also be a great opportunity for parents to read to their kids. The story along with the images should captivate most kids and help their imaginations run wild with excitement.

While it had to sacrifice some scenes for sake of page count, this book is an awesome take on my favorite film in the sage Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Check out all the details below, and go pick up a copy for yourself and your kids this Wednesday at your local comic shop!
