DAVE FILONI TALKS ABOUT ‘THE CLONE WARS’ FINAL SCENE

Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni recently sat down with the folks at Entertainment Tonight to talk about Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the series finale. Filoni talked about the ending and that he’s had this particular one in mind for a long time now.

That’s an idea that I’ve had for a very long time. As I went over different ways to end the show, that was always one of the options I had.

“Ultimately, since Star Wars is a saga about the Skywalker family and Anakin plays a large role in the Clone Wars, but also in Ahsoka’s life, I felt that if you watch the four parts, as much as Sidious has this hidden layer of character arc in the episodes, so does Anakin.”

Filoni then continued further, explaining why it was important for him to end the show, focusing on Darth Vader, rather than Ahsoka.

I wanted to draw a full arc for him where if you’ve never seen Star Wars, you hopefully will be able to understand that the young man that Ahsoka is very good friends with, that’s like a brother to her in the beginning, that the villain Maul says, “Hey, he’s going to turn out to be this bad guy,” in the end you see that, well, that was actually unfortunately true. The through line is the lightsabers that he worked on for her. There’s this symbolic arc of Anakin underneath that all.

As to some of the visual choices that were made for the finale, Filoni explained some of those choices as well.

” Everything is bleached out. Everything is pretty stark. Everything’s washed away color-wise, which is what George did it at the end of Revenge of the Sith. A lot of things I do are just ways of taking what George did and reasserting them, enhancing them, showing that this is what his half of Star Wars is about, ultimately, and how the heroes will prevail through it, despite all of the wickedness of the enemy.”

Finally, Filoni dishes on the last moment we see, between Anakin and Ahsoka.

“The one thing that I felt strongly about was that she’s in a different place in life. And he never quite fully gets that when he’s with her again, that leaving the Jedi order and meeting Trace and Rafa, those adventures have made an impact on her.”

About Star Wars: The Clone Wars:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be returning with 12 all-new episodes on Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming service. Created by George Lucas, the show first aired in 2008 and became an entry point into Star Wars for an entire generation, following fan-favorites like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padmé Amidala, while introducing major new characters like Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex. Its stories were complex, its heroes and villains were perfectly imperfect, and its look was captivatingly beautiful. It became a multi-Emmy winner and is now regarded as essential Star Wars.

New Star Wars Animation Coming Soon!

With Star Wars Rebels in our rearview mirror, it comes as no surprise that Disney has started putting things together for a new animated series.

Debuting this fall on Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD, Star Wars Resistance will take place before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and centers on a young pilot, Kazuda Xiono, who is recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order.

The voice cast for the new series includes Donald Faison, Bobby Moynihan, Jim Rash. Much to our surprise, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie will voice their “Force Awakens” counterparts Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, respectively. It also seems as though BB-8 will also appear.

Star Wars Resistance was created by LucasFilm Animation’s Dave Filoni, who served as an executive producer on the last animated show, Star Wars Rebels.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

As always, leave your thoughts in the appropriate places.

Kevin Kiner Finishes Score for Star Wars Rebels

In a bit of sad news, it seems as if the reality of Star Wars Rebels wrapping up is starting to sink in. Composer Kevin Kiner has finished scoring the last half of Star Wars Rebels season 4. Executive Producer Dave Filoni tweeted an image of the orchestra playing their final notes for the score, with a nice loth-cat shadow appearing in the front.

Only a few episodes are left in season 4, that should wrap up the Star Wars Rebels storyline. Hopefully some of our favorite Rebels survive the upcoming episodes. We do know that Hera and Chopper make it through because of their appearance/mention in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Star Wars Rebels Season 4 Trailer and Panel Roundup

Rebels Season 4 Trailer

During the Star Wars Rebels panel at Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017, several bombshells were dropped about the upcoming season 4.  The first was the Star Wars Rebels Season 4 Trailer, which you can see below.  In it we see Ezra with a modified Scout Trooper helmet, custom painted by Sabine, Sabine and Ezra riding some sort of huge wolf, Hera and Kanan sharing a tender moment, Thrawn, U-Wings, X-Wings, and more!

Warwick Davis was also announced as a new cast member for season 4.  The actor will be playing the character of Rukh.  Heir to the Empire find will remember this as one of Thrawn’s bodyguards. In the Legends canon, Ruhk was a deadly and stealthy warrior, and was often at Thrawn’s side while the Grand Admiral waged his military campaign against the New Republic.

The last bit of news is more of a sad note.  Dave Filoni announced that season 4 would be the last season of Star Wars Rebels.  He reiterated that this doesn’t mean an end to Star Wars animation, just an end for this series.  He went on to indicate that this final season would be darker and more exciting that those coming before.

Dave Filoni Creatively Overseeing Future Star Wars Animation Projects

Dave Filoni

Last night’s Star Wars Rebels season 3 premiere was another typically fantastic addition to the franchise.  The show came on and went off like every other episode, but with one distinct difference!  Dave Filoni is no longer listed as the Supervising Director.

How is that you say?  Wasn’t he at Celebration Europe a couple of months ago, giving fans the lowdown on season 3?  Well it seems the move is not a demotion.  He is not going anywhere.  Justin Ridge has taken over the Supervising Director slot, and Filoni has moved into more of a creative overseer (think George Lucas, to the Clone Wars).

The move gives Filoni more control over the story and concepts, without having to worry about the day-to-day grind of getting each show out.

In fact one Lucasfilm employee tweeted the following after the news was released, to ease the minds of fans…

Dave is still just as involved as ever – overseeing all aspects of Star Wars Rebels production as Executive Producer and occasionally directing episodes.  In many ways, mentoring Justin and moving him into the role as Supervising Director has made it possible for Dave to be even more immersed in the writing and story structure of the show as well as creatively overseeing future animation development. Justin started with Lucasfilm Animation on the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and worked with Dave before that on Avatar: The Last Airbender, so they’ve been working together for quite some time.

One key element to take away from the tweet above is the “overseeing future animation development”.  It has been rumored that Rebels was always going to be a three year type of project.  This is season three, so…

Now comes the chance for lots of fan speculation, on what the next project, or projects will be…  Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!
