Ryan Gosling Star Wars Starfighter: Actor Teases a Top Career Moment

The upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated projects in the galaxy far, far away. Much of that excitement stems from its leading man, Ryan Gosling. During the current press tour for his recent sci-fi hit Project Hail Mary, Gosling has been fielding numerous questions about his jump into the Star Wars universe, and he recently shared a story that has fans buzzing.

In a recent conversation with BBC Radio 1, Gosling discussed his experience filming the standalone adventure. While he was careful not to reveal too many spoilers that might upset the team at Lucasfilm, he did share a specific detail about a scene that he considers one of the absolute highlights of his long and storied career.

A Special Interaction in the Creature Shop

According to Gosling, his favorite moment didn’t come from a script mandate but rather from his own curiosity and initiative during pre-production. The actor revealed that he visited the creature shop early on to see the various aliens and animatronics being constructed for the film. His goal was to find ways to interact with the world more naturally, rather than just having digital effects or background actors fill the space.

“I went to the creature shop early to see everything that they were building so that I could find ways to interact with them in the film,” Gosling explained. “I didn’t want them just to be going by in the background.”

During this visit, Gosling spotted a specific creature that was originally intended to be a background extra. He was so taken with the design and the craftsmanship of the puppet that he requested a dedicated scene with it. The production team agreed, and the resulting sequence was an improvised success. Gosling noted that it ended up being “one of the most fun scenes” he has ever filmed.

The experience clearly left an impression on the actor. He mentioned that as a wrap gift, the crew made him a model of that very creature, which now has a permanent home in his house. While he couldn’t share the full story behind the scene on camera, his enthusiasm suggests a return to the practical, character-driven charm that many fans loved about the original trilogy.

What We Know About Star Wars: Starfighter

Directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Free Guy), Star Wars: Starfighter is set to take place approximately five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. While the plot remains largely under wraps, we know that Gosling plays a mentor-style figure who embarks on a journey with a younger character, played by Flynn Gray.

The cast is a powerhouse of talent, including Amy Adams, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth. Rumors have also circulated about high-profile guests on set; reports suggest that even Tom Cruise visited during production and may have even stepped behind the camera to help film a sequence.

A New Chapter for the Franchise

For Ryan Gosling, Star Wars: Starfighter represents a major career shift. The actor has historically avoided long-running franchises, preferring standalone films and unique character studies. He credits Shawn Levy’s infectious energy and a compelling script for finally convincing him to join the Star Wars family.

With a release date currently set for May 28, 2027, the film is poised to be a massive theatrical event. Between the use of practical puppets and the improvised chemistry between Gosling and his alien co-stars, Star Wars: Starfighter looks to be recapturing the “magic” that has defined the series for decades.
