Werner Herzog Reveals the Surprising Reason He Joined The Mandalorian

Werner Herzog portraying The Client in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

The Star Wars universe is known for its vast array of alien species, sweeping landscapes, and epic battles between light and dark. However, one of the most unexpected and captivating elements of the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian wasn’t a CGI creature or a lightsaber duel. It was the presence of legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog.

Known for his profound documentaries and intense, often bleak, cinematic visions, Herzog’s leap into the galaxy far, far away left many wondering: how did a master of arthouse cinema end up in a big-budget sci-fi franchise? A recent deep dive by CinemaBlend sheds light on this fascinating casting choice. It also provides a glimpse of Herzog’s own motivations for taking on the role of “The Client.”

A Meeting of Creative Minds

The story of Werner Herzog’s The Mandalorian connection began with a simple invitation from the show’s creator, Jon Favreau. Despite not being a lifelong follower of the Star Wars saga, Herzog was intrigued by the pitch. Favreau, a long-time admirer of Herzog’s work, saw in the director a gravitas and a unique screen presence that would perfectly suit the role of a mysterious, remnants-of-the-Empire official.

In interviews, Herzog has been characteristically candid about his lack of prior knowledge regarding the franchise. He famously admitted to never having seen a Star Wars film before being cast. However, this lack of “fan” baggage allowed him to approach the character with a fresh, unfiltered perspective. For Herzog, the draw wasn’t the lore or the brand; it was the storytelling and the opportunity to work within a new technical frontier.

The Power of the Script and the Volume

What ultimately convinced Herzog to sign on was the quality of the scripts. He praised the writing for its clarity and the “epic” quality of the narrative. Herzog has always been a storyteller at heart, and he recognized in The Mandalorian a classic tale of a lone bounty hunter that transcended its sci-fi trappings.

Furthermore, the innovative technology used to film the series, specifically “The Volume,” a massive LED video wall that creates immersive digital environments, fascinated the filmmaker. Herzog, who has spent his career filming in some of the world’s most extreme and challenging real-world locations, was impressed by the technical achievement and the way it allowed actors to feel truly present in the world of the story.

Becoming a Fan Favorite

Despite his “outsider” status, Herzog quickly became one of the most beloved figures in the early days of the series. His delivery of lines like “I would like to see the baby” became instant memes, and his cold, calculating demeanor as The Client provided a grounded sense of menace that contrasted beautifully with the more fantastical elements of the show.

Star Wars fans embraced Herzog not just for his performance, but for the sheer novelty of his involvement. His presence added a layer of prestige and intellectual curiosity to the show, bridging the gap between high-brow cinema and popular genre entertainment.

Legacy of The Client

Werner Herzog’s stint in the Star Wars universe may have been relatively brief, but its impact remains significant. He proved that the franchise has room for diverse voices and artistic sensibilities. His participation served as a testament to the creative vision of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, who were willing to look outside the traditional casting pool to find the perfect fit for their story.

Today, when fans look back at the origins of The Mandalorian, Herzog’s performance stands out as a highlight. It remains a reminder that sometimes, the most compelling stories are the ones that bring together the most unlikely collaborators. Whether you are a die-hard Star Wars follower or a devotee of international cinema, the collaboration between Werner Herzog The Mandalorian team remains a fascinating chapter in television history.

Breaking News from Lucasfilm!!!

The Mandalorian and Grogu are embarking on a new adventure — to movie theaters.

Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing Ahsoka Season 2, among those in the works.

So what does this mean for the Dave Filoni film that was announced at last year’s Star Wars Celebration? Inquiring minds would like to know. Leave your thoughts in the appropriate places!

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Wins Emmy!

The first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards sees a win for the Star Wars franchise. In the category for Outstanding Stunt Performance, Lateef Crowder, Paul Darnell, JJ Dashnaw, and Ryan Ryusaki took home an award for their work on “Chapter 24: The Return.” The Mandalorian season 3 was also nominated for eight other awards Saturday.

The Mandalorian was up against some fierce competition with FBI: Most Wanted and Stranger Things season 4 for this award. This actaully marks the 15th Emmy for the show through three seasons.

The other eight categories that the show was up for were:

  • Outstanding Cinematography for Half-Hour Series (Atlanta)
  • Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes (House of the Dragon)
  • Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling (Queen Charlotte)
  • Outstanding Period and/or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel)
  • Outstanding Sound Editing for Half-Hour Series (The Bear)
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing for Half-Hour Series (The Bear)
  • Outstanding Visual Effects (The Last of Us won)
  • Outstanding Stunt Coordination (The Boys)

The televised Emmy Awards will be held on Monday, January 15. The Mandalorian will not be present there, as the nine categories it was nominated in have already been called. But Star Wars will still have a presence through Andor, which is up for multiple awards including Best Drama Series (likely to go to Succession, though), and Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is up for Best Limited or Anthology Series.

Simon Kassianides Talks Returning to The Mandalorian After an Uncertain Future

A few months ago, Star Wars: The Mandalorian star Katee Sackhoff confirmed that fellow Mandalorian Axe Woves was set to meet his untimely death at the end of season 2 of the series. This was the reason he was not seen in the finale, and why he was back for the third season.

Axe Woves actor Simon Kassianides, revealed in a new interview with The Holo Files that his character was set to meet his fate in Chapter 11: The Heiress. However, during post-production Jon Favreau had a change of plans, and scrapped the scenes that were shot from the finished product.

“The way I look at it is that it’s really the storytellers’ story to tell, so Jon and Dave and all the guys that create the show,” he says. “They’re such experts in deciding everything, and they see how they want to shape things.”

“I can’t really speak to [deciding to make Axe Woves live], because I think I was just mostly excited that it didn’t go that way. I do remember them calling me saying, ‘Would you like to come back and film?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, cool.'”

“It was beyond the season [2] finale having been locked, so it was too late to be inserted into a finale,” Kassianides continues. “So, there was a lot of the ‘Where was he? What were you doing? Why weren’t you in it?’ Now the cat’s out the bag.”

Woves also somehow managed to survive the events of season 3, despite it looking like his character might be making a heel turn, and then possibly making a heroic sacrifice. Instead, he survived the events of the finale, and looks to be returning for future episodes of the series.

“Jon and I sat down and he said, ‘How do you feel about this arc and how would you feel about saying something?’ And he said to try ‘For Mandalore!’ And well, you know the rest is history, but it was an amazing moment, thinking about them all returning, especially the back story that I built into that moment in terms of what it meant for that character.”

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 4 Production Delay Likely Due to WGA Strike

The reverberations from the WGA strike have been all across Hollywood, and are starting to make their presence felt at Lucasfilm and Disney. According to a new Deadline report, Lucasfilm is likely to push the production start date for Star Wars: The Mandalorian season 4. While the season has not officially been announced by Lucasfilm, Jon Favreau has indicated in the recent past that the scripts for season 4 were completed.

The production was supposedly going to start in September, but Deadline is saying that this will most likely be pushed back.

Typically during a WGA strike, there is no writer present on set. All writing work halts. Additionally, picketing often interrupts production as teamsters and crew members refuse to cross, which is what recently happened with fellow Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. The writers strike, which started May 2, is entering its third week.

If filming were to start on season four, Favreau, who is the showrunner of the series in addition to being a writer, would find himself in hot water with the WGA. Even though the scripts were completed this past Spring, other job duties Favreau might have such as minor dialogue or narration changes, would not be allowed in his role as producer and showrunner of the series, since he is a member of the WGA.

Look for more information about this soon. Keep it here for all of your Star Wars news!

Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian – The Making of Season 3 to Debut June 28 on Disney+

If you enjoyed the first two seasons of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, then get prepared for season 3! Disney just announced that season 3 of the behind the scenes show will debut on Disney+ June 28th.

If you have not seen them, they are a fantastic look at the making of the shows. From interviews to a look at the processes that go into them, it is a phenomenal documentary style show. The first season had a round table interview with all the directors of the first season, and Dave Filoni blew the doors off of it. He showed everyone in the room, and those at home that he understands Star Wars like no one, with the exception of George Lucas himself.
