Oga’s Cantina Refurbishment: Disney Erases Galactic Starcruiser Connection

Oga's Cantina

As Star Wars fans prepare for the massive timeline shift coming to Galaxy’s Edge, the most popular watering hole in the parsec is already showing signs of the changing eras. According to WMWNT, Oga’s Cantina at Disneyland has officially reopened following a multi-month refurbishment, and with its return comes a quiet but significant scrubbing of its connection to a defunct piece of Disney history.

While the physical space remains largely the same, the story unfolding within the walls of Black Spire Outpost is shifting backward in time.

The Removal of the Galactic Starcruiser Reference

For years, a small notice board near the entrance of Oga’s Cantina featured a collection of messages written in Aurebesh. One of these messages served as a direct nod to the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a two-night immersive experience at Walt Disney World that permanently closed in 2023.

The original message read:

“Mechanic Wanted! Experience with Chandrilan class 1 starships required. Ability to speak Shyriiwook a plus. Contact Captain R. Keevan of the Halcyon, CSL.”

Captain Keevan and the Halcyon were the heart of the Starcruiser’s narrative. Following the recent refurbishment, this flyer has been removed. In its place, a new message better aligns with the broader Star Wars timeline:

“Make Some Quick Credits! Sell your Surplus! Imperial, Rebel, Republic, or Separatist – Black Spire Outpost will buy it all!”

By referencing the Empire, the Rebellion, and even the Separatists, the new sign supports the upcoming transition where the land will no longer be strictly locked into the sequel trilogy era.

DJ R-3X and the Timeline Shift

The changes aren’t just visual. The beloved droid DJ R-3X (formerly RX-24 from Star Tours) has also undergone a “reprogramming.” According to reports from the reopening, several of R-3X’s dialogue lines that specifically referenced the First Order and the Resistance have been silenced.

This is part of a larger strategy by Disney to “unlock” the timeline at Disneyland’s version of the land. Starting April 29, 2026, guests will begin to see characters from across the saga, including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. To make this work narratively, Oga’s Cantina is now being framed as a location that “recently opened” during the era of the Galactic Civil War.

What’s New (and What’s the Same) inside Oga’s Cantina

Beyond the lore updates, the refurbishment focused heavily on maintenance. The drainage systems were updated, and several pieces of furniture, including the booths and tables, were replaced with fresh versions that maintain their original “lived-in” aesthetic.

Fans of the cantina’s menu will find that their favorite concoctions remain. The Fuzzy Tauntaun, Jedi Mind Trick, and Blue Bantha continue to be staples for travelers looking to escape the heat of the Twin Suns. While the land’s transition to a multi-era “Greatest Hits” format has sparked debate among some Star Wars fans who appreciated the strict immersion of the original 34 ABY setting, the crowds returning to the cantina suggest that the demand for a drink at Oga’s remains as high as ever.

The timeline shift is currently exclusive to Disneyland Park. At this time, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida is expected to maintain its current sequel-era storyline, though many wonder if the East Coast will eventually follow suit.

New Details Emerge About Galaxy’s Edge’s Cantina and Outpost

Oga's Cantina

Barrons has a new article about things to expect in the upcoming launch of Disney’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge park. The article gives us some legitimate insight into Oga’s Cantina and the Black Spire Outpost, letting us know what to expect at each place.

Some of the article’s highlights include:

Building exteriors in Galaxy’s Edge are designed to look weathered from the first day of completion; visitors who have seen Harambe Market in the Africa section of Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, near Orlando, Fla., will find a similar attention to detail here, such as the way faint rust streaks flow down from the corners of metal grates.

Concerning Oga’s Cantina:

The first public restaurant in Disneyland to serve alcohol, Oga’s is relatively small for aesthetic reasons, and is likely to be popular. To maximize capacity and keep visits from becoming all-afternoon affairs, most guests will stand. There will be a handful of booths with seating around the outer edge of the restaurant; no decision has been made yet on whether or how these can be reserved. An intricate tangle of tubes and vessels behind the bar might make some drinks appear to flow from the ceiling. We heard a mention of a Fuzzy Tauntaun, named for the furry snow lizards ridden in Empire Strikes Back, although it’s unclear if that’s a hypothetical drink or a planned one, and the menu is still being decided.

Looking for some Blue Milk? Here is how to find out, and what it actually is…

Visitors will be able to order blue milk at Galaxy’s Edge, recalling the secretion of a bantha—a large, hairy animal with spiral horns—drank by Luke Skywalker in the first film (which, due to the later addition of prequels, is now known as Episode IV: A New Hope). This will be a nondairy drink. It’s unclear whether it will be sold in Oga’s or in the outdoor marketplace, or both. It’s possible it will be sold by or near a bantha farmer, suggesting the marketplace.

Want to know a little about the shopping, and what you might be able to find there?

Shops will be supplied from a common stockroom, and restaurants from a common kitchen, to increase efficiency. One shop will feature droids that visitors can customize through an interactive experience. A droid that is made to be, say, afraid of stormtroopers might signal its fear when one comes close. Droids owned by members of the same group might recognize each other when they meet. Prices have not been set. The shop might also sell a full-size R2-D2 for well-heeled fans, perhaps costing thousands.

There will be another shop presided over by Dok-Ondar, a collector who is briefly mentioned in Solo. This character, likely animatronic, will be set apart in a booth from the rest of the staff, not unlike the dispatcher Louie De Palma in the old ABC sitcom Taxi. Cast members might interact with Dok-Ondar, asking him what he’s willing to let certain items go for. Elsewhere, there will be an outdoor market resembling a bazaar. A pod-racing engine, perhaps at the market, will be used to roast meat.

For Galaxy’s Edge, imagineers have worked with filmmakers, chefs, and merchandise executives to take adherence to storytelling to new levels for a Disney park attraction. One possibility is that Star Wars merchandise in shops will come in unique packaging that downplays the logos. Another is that merchandise based on familiar characters will take on new looks. The imagineers visited the archives at Lucasfilm for early concept art. As a hypothetical example, an artisan figure of a familiar character might look slightly off, with the back story being that residents of Batuu have never seen that character, so they don’t know exactly what the figure should look like.
