BENIOFF AND WEISS EXIT STAR WARS FILM

In a bit of news that seemed to come as no surprise for those following these types of things, Game of Thrones duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have left their deal for new Star Wars films.

Much was made of the duo’s development of a new Star Wars film or films, but after signing a longterm deal with Netflix, it seemed that there time at Lucasfilm would be cut short.

The two were supposed to bring in a new era of Star Wars, after the original saga was wrapped up with December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. According to Deadline, they cited the Netflix deal as their reason for leaving. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full up.

“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy didn’t close shut any doors in her send-off statement on Monday: “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the GOT pair said in a statement to Deadline. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

This is just the latest in the shakeups that have resulted from what some fans think is “bad Star Wars” from Disney. Earlier this month it was revealed that Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige would be developing a Star Wars film soon, and many in the fan community think that this is just the start of a transition to power at Lucasfilm for Feige.

Could Rian Johnson’s new Star Wars trilogy be on the chopping block after this announcement? Only time will tell…

DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS WILL MAKE THE NEXT STAR WARS FILM

Disney CEO Bob Iger, at a Q&A session during the 6th Annual MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, revealed that the next film on the production slate for the Star Wars universe will be one helmed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The film is scheduled for a 2022 release.

Since Disney released news of the Star Wars franchise taking a small break from the big screen, and resuming in 2022, fans all around have wondered which trilogy would come first. The Benioff and Weiss, or the Rian Johnson trilogy. It seems like we finally have our answer.

Iger also revealed that a third live action television series was in development at Disney+ for the Star Wars universe. No information as to what it would be about or a release date was given.

Stay tuned for more information as it is released.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to Write and Produce New Series of Star Wars Films

Lucasfilm has just announced a new set of Star Wars films by Games of Thrones TV series creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. No release dates or storylines were given, other than they will be set apart from the Skywalker family and Rian Johnson’s trilogy.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No release dates have been set for the new films, and there have (thankfully) been no sightings of White Walkers around Lucasfilm.
