‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Will Release in 2026

During yesterday’s Disney Quarter 1 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger gave a rundown of the company’s upcoming releases through 2026. Among there were several Marvel films, Pixar films, and of course a Star Wars film at the end…

“Looking to our 2025 theatrical slate, we’re excited to bring audiences Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic Four for Marvel, Pixar has Zootopia 2, and then there’s Avatar 3. And we’re already looking forward to 2026 and beyond with Frozen 3, the first Toy Story movie since 2019, and a new Star Wars movie that brings The Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen for the very first time.

The films goes into production at some point this year, but the release year was sort of left up in the air from the press release that Lucasfilm gave us a few weeks ago. Pedro Pascal currently has his plate full with the Last of Us season 2, and the rumors that the Fantastic Four film will start filming this year. That doesn’t leave much room for filming in 2024.

With that said, who knows how much we will see of his face in the movie anyway. Especially given that his sect of Mandalorians don’t believe in removing their helmets. So it may not even matter for him, especially if it is just voice work he is doing.

While we don’t have an official date yet, you can probably expect this to be the film that Lucasfilm had on its schedule for a May 22, 2026.

3 NEW STAR WARS SERIES “IN THE WORKS” AT DISNEY+

In the latest stock holders meeting for Disney, CEO Bob Iger announced that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be the last film for a little while in the galaxy far, far away. For those of us that have been following along, that news is not really a surprise as this has been mentioned a few times along the way.

However, Iger did say that Star Wars will be a major player on the companies upcoming streaming service Disney+. The service will debut Tuesday with the Star Wars show The Mandalorian, with three separate shows still in some form of development. We know the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is almost ready and will hit the service in February, a Cassian Andor show is coming next year, and a Kenobi show is currently in development. That doesn’t include the news of a second season of The Mandalorian, which has begun production.

Iger mentions that 3 series are in the works for Disney+, but is it the three shows mentioned above, or is it three new shows, or some combination of the two?

If you had your say with Disney, what shows would you be interested in seeing on the streaming service? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!

DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS WILL MAKE THE NEXT STAR WARS FILM

Disney CEO Bob Iger, at a Q&A session during the 6th Annual MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, revealed that the next film on the production slate for the Star Wars universe will be one helmed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The film is scheduled for a 2022 release.

Since Disney released news of the Star Wars franchise taking a small break from the big screen, and resuming in 2022, fans all around have wondered which trilogy would come first. The Benioff and Weiss, or the Rian Johnson trilogy. It seems like we finally have our answer.

Iger also revealed that a third live action television series was in development at Disney+ for the Star Wars universe. No information as to what it would be about or a release date was given.

Stay tuned for more information as it is released.

Star Wars to Take a Break at the Box Office After The Rise of Skywalker

According to a new interview with Bloomberg, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger revealed that Star Wars will be taking a little hiatus from the theaters after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

“We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter,” Iger said in a Bloomberg Television interview Thursday. “There are movies in development, but we have not announced them.”

He goes on to indicate that the primary focus for the near future is the launch of their streaming service Disney+, and making sure that it is a success.

After that, the franchise will focus more on TV projects, Iger said.

“We will take a pause, some time, and reset,” he said, “because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Stars Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.”

We know that Rian Johnson has a new trilogy in development, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss also have their own trilogy in development. With that in mind, there are no shortage of movies in production, it seems that they will take their time and get these right. Let them simmer so to speak, while Disney+ breaks open new content for the franchise.

What was in the Footage of Episode IX Shown to Disney Shareholders?

Yesterday was Disney’s big shareholders meeting where Bob Iger tells everyone how well Disney is doing financially, and gives glimpses of the future. Part of that future was announcing the opening dates for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, but one of the bigger pieces of news was that shareholders at the meeting got to see a glimpse of Star Wars Episode IX.

Of course, that footage will not be made public, but someone attending the meeting shared a tweet about what he saw, giving us an excellent description of the scenes.

SPOILERS AHEAD… If you don’t want to know, then don’t continue on!

Perhaps the biggest news was the fact that Vader’s helmet is making a return. If you remember back to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, one of Kylo’s motivations to stay with the dark side of the force, was talking to his grandfather’s burnt helmet.

The stormtroopers getting blown up in a hangar bay is sort of par for the course in Star Wars, but the blockade runner was interesting. It seems the Resistance (or Rebellion) is using anything and everything to help in the plan to destroy the First Order.

About Star Wars: Episode IX:

The cast includes Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Michelle Rejwan, and executive produced by Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin. The crew includes Dan Mindel (Director of Photography), Rick Carter and Kevin Jenkins (Co-Production Designers), Michael Kaplan (Costume Designer), Neal Scanlan (Creature and Droid FX), Maryann Brandon and Stefan Grube (Editors), Roger Guyett (VFX Supervisor), Tommy Gormley (1st AD), and Victoria Mahoney (2nd Unit Director).

Release is scheduled for December 2019.

Bob Iger Announces Multiple New Star Wars Shows for Upcoming Disney Streaming Service

Star Wars Logo

Yesterday Lucasfilm reported that a new series of Star Wars films would be coming, written and produced by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Now Bob Iger has made his own announcement concerning the upcoming Disney streaming service, with the announcement of more than one new Star Wars shows currently being planned by Lucasfilm. The news came from a Disney earnings call for the first quarter of the fiscal year.

“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that,” he said during an earnings call Tuesday. “I think you’ll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well.”

Ben Fritz from the Wall Street Journal indicated that Iger said the talent level on these projects would be rather significant.

So what all does this mean? I would guess that in addition to a new animated show coming to Disney XD after the departure of Star Wars Rebels, that we will finally get to see that long talked about live action Star Wars show on this service. We might also see another animated show or two, and might even see Star Wars Detours in some form on the service. We could also see a fan related show or two. Given the success of The Star Wars Show on Youtube, Disney might have plans to port something similar over to their streaming service.

Of course all of this is conjecture on our part, until something official is announced. What are you interested in seeing on the streaming service? Let us know on our various social media sites. Also check out the trailer for Star Wars Detours, that has been sitting on a shelf for half a decade now.

The Star Wars Family Responds to the Loss of Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher

It is still difficult to comprehend that we have lost our Princess, and it seems to be the same for people all over the world.  Now Carrie Fisher’s Star Wars family has started releasing statements about their friend.

George Lucas:

“Carrie and I have been friends most of our adult lives. She was extremely smart; a talented actress, writer and comedienne with a very colorful personality that everyone loved.

In Star Wars she was our great and powerful princess — feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more difficult than most people might think. My heart and prayers are with Billie, Debbie and all Carrie’s family, friends and fans. She will be missed by all. — George Lucas”

Harrison Ford:

“Carrie was one-of-a-kind…brilliant, original. Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely…My thoughts are with her daughter Billie, her Mother Debbie, her brother Todd, and her many friends. We will all miss her.”

Mark Hamill:

Anthony Daniels

Billy Dee Williams:

Kathleen Kennedy:

“Carrie holds such special place in the hearts of everyone at Lucasfilm it is difficult to think of a world without her. She was Princess Leia to the world but a very special friend to all of us. She had an indomitable spirit, incredible wit, and a loving heart. Carrie also defined the female hero of our age over a generation ago. Her groundbreaking role as Princess Leia served as an inspiration of power and confidence for young girls everywhere. We will miss her dearly.”

J.J. Abrams:

Rian Johnson:

Bog Iger:

“Carrie Fisher was one-of-a-kind, a true character who shared her talent and her truth with us all with her trademark wit and irreverence. Millions fell in love with her as the indomitable Princess Leia; she will always have a special place in the hearts of Star Warsfans as well as all of us who were lucky enough to know her personally. She will be sorely missed, and we join millions of fans and friends around the world who mourn her loss today.”

According to a report by TMZ, Fisher went into cardiac arrest and medical personnel on board were able to administer CPR. She was reportedly in stable condition over the next few days, but passed away this morning.
