A new player is on the court today in terms of Star Wars collectibles, and their name is Royal Selangor. The company is known as the world’s largest pewter maker and from the looks of these new items, it shows! Royal Selangor recently released a video on youtube showcasing their new Star Wars products, and also gave a little behind-the-scenes information on the process they went through with Lucasfilm, on getting the sculpts just right.
Since licensing rights might limit the geographic regions where these can be sold, it might be tough trying to snag some of these items, but no doubt if enough interest is garnered, then companies like Big Bad Toy Store or Entertainment Earth would surely try to import them.
Official Press Release for the launch of the line:
Star Wars by Royal Selangor will debut with our UK trade launch at Autumn Fair at Birmingham’s NEC, Sunday 6th – Wednesday 9th September, Hall 5 Stand 5K60.
The launch will preview for the first time in the UK our luxury pewter Star Wars collection. This will showcase global limited edition pieces, character figurines, as well as collectibles and accessories, including cufflinks, flash drives, tumblers and mugs.
See you there… and may the force be with you!
Pewter is an alloy composed primarily of tin. The world’s fourth most precious metal after platinum, gold and silver, it becomes pewter with the addition of small amounts of antimony and copper.
Royal Selangor pewter consists of 92% to 97% tin, with a small proportion of copper and antimony added to strengthen the alloy – the highest international standard for pewter. Al tableware products produced are food safe as Royal Selangor pewter is lead free.
Pewter’s unique characteristics, its low melting point and relative softness, makes it ideal for craftsmen and designers to work with. Loved for its versatility and feel, it can be fashioned in a variety of finishes – a traditional soft satin lustre, a dazzling brilliance that rivals silver or a subdued ‘antique’ finish.
Royal Selangor produces high quality cast pewter, which is heavier and stronger than spun pewter. When struck gently, it produces a resonant sound.
Today, the Royal Selangor group is a diversified enterprise. Complementing its pewter brand are two luxury names – fine jewellery brand, Selberan, and 350-year-old sterling silver brand, Comyns.
Royal Selangor has grown from a small family-run business to one of the best known pewter brands. It is little wonder that it has played host to several prominent figures, which include former US President Bill Clinton, lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, actor Mel Gibson and Managing Director of International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde.
