The galaxy’s most resilient survivor is back in the spotlight. Lucasfilm has officially released the Maul: Shadow Lord first clip, offering fans an intense look at the upcoming animated series set to premiere on Disney+ this April. The footage confirms what many have long suspected: the transition from the end of The Clone Wars to the era of the Empire was anything but quiet for the former Sith apprentice.
A Darker Vision of the Underworld
The newly released footage gives us a look at some sort of robbery taking place by Maul’s group. The planet looks to be Coruscant, but there are many planets in the Star Wars universe with similar looks. The planets police show up during the operation, and we get our first look at Maul. Along with his debut, we get a familiar John Williams theme from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It is a welcome surprise, and fitting for the character.
The animation style is one of the most striking elements revealed. Moving away from the hyper-realistic 3D look of The Bad Batch, Shadow Lord utilizes a hybrid approach. It blends CG character models with hand-painted textures and “painterly” background matte paintings. Supervising director Brad Rau noted that the goal was to “put the hand of the artist in every frame,” and the results are visible in the way the shadows and lightsaber glows bleed into the environment like ink on glass.
Revenge and a New Apprentice
In this new series, Maul has a new apprentice, Devon Izara. Voiced by Gideon Adlon, Devon is a disillusioned Twi’lek Padawan surviving in the wake of Order 66. The dynamic between the two is immediately palpable; Maul isn’t looking for a friend, but a tool. He sees in Devon the potential for a new kind of apprentice, one he can mold away from the rigid doctrines of both the Jedi and the Sith.
Fans of The Clone Wars will recognize Sam Witwer’s iconic vocal performance, which continues to bring a layer of Shakespearean tragedy and simmering rage to the character. Maul’s mission in Shadow Lord is twofold: he seeks to rebuild the criminal empire he lost after his defeat on Mandalore and to strike back at the master who discarded him, Darth Sidious.
Premiere Date and Release Schedule
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is scheduled to debut on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. The series will launch with a special two-episode premiere, followed by two new chapters every week. This aggressive release schedule will lead directly to the season finale on May 4, 2026, Star Wars Day.
With 10 episodes in total, the series promises to bridge the narrative gap between Maul’s appearance in The Clone Wars and his eventual cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. If the Maul: Shadow Lord first clip is any indication, this will be a high-octane, emotionally heavy addition to the Star Wars canon that fans won’t want to miss.
